I somehow changed the appearance of my desktop icons
after copying a .tif file to my desktop. My background
is a family photograph. The text (icon description)
under each icon used to be white, with the photo visible
all around the text. Now, there is a colored box under
each icon with the text in it, covering parts of the
photo. It is driving me crazy, as I cannot figure out
how to elimate the box.

easy! :)

if you mean the desktop icon text background color, you can change it to
white by going to desktop properties > desktop > and change the color to
white.

or you can make it transparent by:
1. rightclicking my computer > properties > advanced > performance settings
> checking "use drop shadows for icon labels.."

or

2. rightclicking the desktop and unchecking lock web items (if you're using
ad).
