I have a wireless router connected to my father's desktop PC via Ethernet, but I use the Wi-Fi mostly on my desktop, which is at the other end of the apartment. So far, I have been using a Asus USB Wi-Fi adapter for my desktop, but the maximum speeds are about a half or less than what my laptop gets near the router (1.5-2 MB/s, compared to 4).

The USB adapter has had a few problems lately, so I am thinking of changing it. But I wonder if I should get another USB adapter, or use a different type of connection.
Bearing in mind that changing the Ethernet cable connection is nearly impossible, what is the easiest and least expensive way to get the fastest Internet connection on my desktop?

I have had good results from using a wireless bridge device to capture the wifi signal and convert it to standard Ethernet. You can pick up devices like that starting at about $20. Since most of them have internal directional antennas they will provide a stronger signal than your usb device.
