Virtual Dub works wonders. Combined with a good CPU and large disk drive, lagarith is a very good codec. Here's a basic guide on how to get started for screen capture. I've used VD for almost a decade now.

1. Download and install Virtual Dub. It's open source and free.
2. Go to file > capture AVI.
3. Choose "device" then "screen capture".
4. Go to video > source and uncheck "remove unchanged frames". Set other settings here as needed.
5. Go to video > set custom format. Choose the video resolution you want (the limit depends on your computer - start with 640x480 to see if your computer can handle it - you can always raise it as needed). Be sure to choose 32-bit ARGB as it's really about the only thing that works.
6. Go to video > compression and choose "lagarith lossless codec" from the list.
7. Adjust the audio settings as needed. I suggest using uncompressed audio for basic editing - you can compress it after editing is done.
8. In the bottom right corner, set the audio format and recording frame rate (usually, 20 fps is sufficient though it depends on what you're doing).
9. When you're all done, go to file > exit capture mode then close Virtual Dub. This will save your settings (if VD crashes, you'll have to repeat this process).
10. Reopen Virtual Dub and reenter capture mode. Your settings should still be the same.
11. Go to file > set capture file and input a file name. I would suggest doing testing first to see what your computer is capable of so indicate that this is a temporary thing.
12. Go to capture > begin capture. Avoid using test capture for capturing.
13. Quickly switch to the target window you want to do and act accordingly. You are recording your actions at this point.
14. When you're done, switch back to VD and go to capture > stop capture.
15. Load the AVI you just recorded and preview it. Make adjustments as needed.
16. Do your main recording afterward using steps 12 to 15.
17. Edit your recording to crop out the lead-in and lead-out events and go from there.
