DHCP not enabled

So, I am trying to go from DHCP to static IP on my computer. (don't ask why, I just want it).
I did this before, and everything worked great.

Now, however, when I set a static IP, it says "DHCP is not enabled for "wireless network x".
Why does it say that? I know I didn't enable DHCP, that's kinda what happens if you set it to static.

Why doesn't it suddenly work anymore?

Actually, instead of right-clicking on "Wireless network connection", you will double-click on it, then select "Details" to examine what DHCP has assigned. Then you can...
Depending on the router you have just simply enable Dhcp mode of the router.
Reserve a range of numbers out of the Dhcp pool for static addressing.

You still need to have a set number of static addresses above 1 for static addressing. IE set the pool size.
Or x amount of machines for Static IP`s.

I am living with multiple people. They use DHCP. However, I want a static IP address. This worked before, now it doesn't.

I get the message in the windows help thingy.

I go to adapter settings, ipv4, set it to a static address, and then once I close that screen and it tries to apply it, I get the message saying "dhcp is not enabled for wireless network".

If I click "repair", it simply switches the settings from whatever IP addresses I gave, to "obtain an IP address automatically".

So, to summarize:

1. I now have DHCP. "obtain IP address automatically" and "use the following DNS service 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4"
2. I want to switch from "obtain IP address automatically" to a static IP address
3. When I do these settings in control panel > all control panel items > network and sharing settings > change adapter settings > wireless network properties > ipv4 > properties & click "OK", I get a message saying (or simply no internet and when I rightclick the connection to "troubleshoot problems")

Windows network diagnostics
the remaining repairs require administrator permissions
problems found
DHCP is not enabled for "wireless network connection".

try these repairs as an administrator.

If I do, I get:
automatically update your network settings -> apply this fix.
If I do, I get:
DHCP is not enabled for "wireless network connection" fixed.

If I then look at my settings, it went back to
"obtain an IP address automatically" and "obtain DNS server address automatically".

sigh... it won't show anything I haven't typed yet. screenshots won't help you >.>

also I have to provide an url to add a photo, so won't work.

I told you EXACTLY what the windows say. Word for word.

I told you EXACTLY what window it is. It is the window that comes up if you do "network diagnostics" by right clicking the network icon in the taskbar.

I seriously do not understand why you would need to see a window around the text to help me 😵

I get the message in the windows help thingy.
This is amazingly specific and tells me exactly where you're looking.

I go to adapter settings, ipv4, set it to a static address, and then once I close that screen and it tries to apply it, I get the message saying "dhcp is not enabled for wireless network".
That is a completely different place from this:
Windows network diagnostics
the remaining repairs require administrator permissions
problems found
DHCP is not enabled for "wireless network connection".

One is saying that it can't apply the settings (if I'm reading you right). The other says that the recommended configuration is DHCP, and if stuff doesn't work, try that.

I don't believe this has been asked, and you didn't state specifically:

Are you using an IP address in the same subnet and outside of the DHCP range of the router?

Apologies if this seems like a basic question, but details may prove helpful in resolving the issue.

I don't know. How do I check that?
Basic questions are great. I don't know anything about computers.

What I do know, is that I typed in the exact same settings before (about a week ago) and it worked perfectly. Now however, it suddenly doesn't.

And for the moderator.. I will tell you exactly what I do again.

1. right click the wifi icon on the bottom right of the windows task bar.
2. open "network and sharing center"
3. click "change adapter settings"
4. right click on "wireless network connection"
5. go to "properties"
6. go to "internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
7. go to "properties"
8. click "use the following IP address"
9. enter the ip address, subnet mask and default gateway
10. click "use the following dns server addresses"
11. enter "8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4."
12. click "ok".

then I no longer have internet.

If I right-click on the wifi icon in the bottom right of the windows 10 taskbar, I click "troubleshoot problems".

Then the "windows network diagnostics" window comes up.
What it says is "dhcp is not enabled for wireless network connection".

I can click it away, in which case I don't have internet.
I can click repair, in which case it will revert the settings back to "obtain ip address automatically" and "set dns automatically".
These settings that get set back I can check by once again going through the numbered list I said.

Hope it's clear.

Actually, instead of right-clicking on "Wireless network connection", you will double-click on it, then select "Details" to examine what DHCP has assigned. Then you can go back and change the IP address as you previous did.

The IPv4 address may be something like 192.168.1.x. You must use the same address, but change the "x" to something other than what DHCP would normally assign. Usually 200 will be safe to use, but don't enter a number higher than 254.

The subnet mask and default gateway must be exactly the same as you see in "Details".

Solution
Thanks a lot. It seems to be working now.

"The IPv4 address may be something like 192.168.1.x. You must use the same address, but change the "x" to something other than what DHCP would normally assign. Usually 200 will be safe to use, but don't enter a number higher than 254."

was what was different, and solved the issue. Thanks.
