I have run some diagnosis tools recently on my win2k advanced server. I get
two warnings when I run
netdiag and dcdiag.

When I run dcdiag I get the following error:
Starting test: services
SMTPSVC service is stopped on [MyServer]

When I run netdiag I get the following error:
LDAP test: passed
[Warning] Failed to query SPN registration on DC 'MyServer.MyDomain.local'.

Can anyone tell me the impact that these warning may have and how to resolve
them please?

Many Thanks,

John

Hi John,

I found the following KB article for netdiag error

1. Netdiag.exe Does Not Query SPN Registration When Down-Level Name Is
Different

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;297384

However i was not able to currently solve the dcdiag error , if you can
throw more light on the error Msg , it will be easy for us to help you. Any
Error msg number or Event ID , etc ..

Regards,
Venkat.

Dear Venkat,

I have read the article that you gave me the url for. Apparently that error
does not have any serious reprecusions. However there are a couple of things
that I am experiencing that I think could possibly related to it.

The first problem I have is with nslookup. When I run the following command:
nslookup -> set type=all -> www.btinternet.com I get:

Server: server01.mydomain.local
Address: 192.168.0.2

Non-authoritative answer:
www.btinternet.com internet address = 194.73.73.113

I know from experience that I should get a whois type of response. e.g. DNS
servers.

The second problem that I have is intermittent network browsing. When
navigating to my network through My Network Places -> Entire Network ->
entire contents -> Microsoft Windows Network -> MyDomain I sometimes get to
see all the computers on the network other times I can only see the server.

Can you shed some light on what could be happening?

Many Thanks,

John
