Did I get scammed on eBay or am I doing something wrong on my end?

Hi, I recently purchased a slot loading drive from eBay which the seller claimed it played blu ray discs. However, I have tried it in a windows 10 desktop machine and a macbook pro and the drive comes up as a DVD drive in both. It plays DVDs just fine but I can't get it to read blu rays. Is there something I might be missing here such as drivers etc or did they actually sell me just a DVD drive? I have contacted them and they are adamant they used the drive to play blu rays and rip them as well. They also said it came from this all in one HP computer which the specs on the website says it came with a blu ray drive. However, this computer appears to have been sold up until 2012 and the drive says it was manufactured in 2015... so it sounds dodgy to me. Unless HP reuses model numbers for their computers?

Panasonic UJ8A7 is a DVD-RW drive. The Panasonic UJ867 is the BR-RW drive. Seller either sent the wrong one (which can happen if there's several that went out) or its not theirs and never looked up the model, just took for granted the owners opinion.

Hi, is the 'part number' the 'model number'? If so, it says UJ8A7
A quick google search lead me to pages saying it's a DVD drive. The seller however is saying that the blu ray drive shares the same model number as a dvd drive but I can't see any evidence of this model number being used for a blu ray drive in google.

The seller scammed you. When they say irresponsible things like "the blu ray drive shares the same model number as a dvd drive" they are trying to pull a quick one over you. Demand a refund and tell them to pay for return shipping too.

Thank you. I'll see about getting a refund from them.

Yeah it definitely seems like that. I've messaged them asking for a refund. Hopefully things go smoothly.

Two optical drives with different tech specs or different capabilities would never have the same model number.

Anyway - - - why buy through Ebay something which wouldn't cost a great deal more from a reputable retail vendor like Amazon?

I only use Ebay if it saves me a lot of money or if product not available elsewhere.

Otherwise it's Amazon.

These slot loading drives aren't really available in Australia and it was a lot cheaper than the ones I was looking at on other sites. I've bought a lot of stuff off of eBay and haven't had any trouble. This is the first time a seller has actively lied about what they're selling. Guess there's a first time for everything.
