Hey guys, quick question. Is the only difference between the G1 and normal just the clock speeds? Also i know the G1 has a back plate. Can't you just OC the 980ti to match the speeds of 980ti G1?

Solution
The Gigabyte G1 Gaming SOC is their top of the line card, bar none. Versus the regular, "vanilla" Gigabyte GTX 980 Ti, the difference is considerable.

The reference card is the same as any reference GTX 980 Ti made by any manufacturer. You will never overclock a reference card to match the speed potential of the G1. The reason being that the G1 uses a very effective custom cooler and all custom, upgraded components that will allow for higher Turbo Boost clocks, much higher than the potential of the reference blower type cooler on the regular card. The regular model does not have a backplate, in answer to your question.

Thanks for that. Kind of stinks that the G1 came out after i got my 980ti but the vanilla should be fine for the things that i do anyways.

I have the GTX 980ti G1 Gaming. Second attempt at over clock. It scored the 2nd highest score on Heaven Benchmark ever.
No over volts used. Very good card, happy doing 2160p Ultra gaming
Overclock I used
Core +157mhz
Ram +890mhz
Amps 130%
max temp allowed 92c
Card did never go past 63c
The G1 can use a extra 75watts of power and has a mass of extra cooling along with the PCB that Gigabyte has gone to work on,
Very good card indeed

Here's the difference before any overclocking.

Yeah, you still got a great card. Table above is before any overclock I take it. Am waiting for waterblocks to come out then second maybe third is being bought and watercooled. Then see if i can get back on 3dmark. been 6-7 years since i got 78th highest tested. Time to make a monster system again

Ahaha cheers guys. This is my first time building a computer and if i new that the G1 gaming would have been just a few weeks after the original i would have waited, but hey who cares. I still like the card, it handles what im after ahah :)

I had a pretty good card GTX980 Palit which overclocks like a mother. so was a easy wait. lol could not wait for seller selling £30 cheaper to get stock. so went with first one with it in stock. Great card and i have only touched on how far it may overclock. :) Being totally honest you can get very near same performance out of refference one. max 15% maybe with big oc on G1. Or maybe at limit nearly now. Good luck for a first build your not doing bad.
My first build
Intel Celron 266mhz oc to 333mhz
2gb ram 233mhz
128mb ATI GPU and mega cooling for celron

Hey, I was just wonder if you could clarify something for me, will all the reference 980ti cards perform the same no matter what manufacturer they are made by? for instance the Asus NVIDIA GTX 980TI will be no differnt from the MSI NVIDIA GTX 980TI as they are both reference cards?

In response to your post, do you have any idea when the waterblock will be released for this card? I was on EK's custom cooling configuration, and they said theirs will be released soon. Are there any other manufacturers building a full waterblock for this card? I ordered this card yesterday and plan to swap it for my 780 Tis I have running SLI, but for the time being I might have to just bypass the GPU in my waterloop until this waterblock is released. I'll probably hold off on buying my 2nd Gigabyte 980 Ti Gaming GPU to run them in SLI until the waterblock is released.

So, have you heard any time frame for it to be released or if EK is the only one making a waterblock?
