what is difference between a wired headset and a wired headset that has to be charged, such as the Turtlebeach Steath 300 and the Razer Kraken Tournament Edition? I will be playing first person shooting games on Xbox and PC.

Solution
The purpose of that headset is to plug straight into the Xbox controller while still having a higher than normal level of audio "quality" (if you can call it that with a headset like this).
I would consider that a tethered wireless headset, not wired.
If I had to guess, the headset needs the battery power to drive itself better than the controller alone could, but still has to get the audio info from somewhere. No benefit in doing this over, say, a fully wireless model.

Theres a reason you dont see many with that sort of design. Either go wireless or dont.
I currently have a Turtlebeach wired headset that requires charging, and many wired headsets on the market have no charging feature. I am just curious on the advantages of wired battery operated headsets.

Ok, thanks I will probably just get a fully wireless headset, since they have basically the same audio quality, for a cheaper price. Thanks.

You may have a wireless headset that can be used with a cable also, don't think I have run into one that needed to be charged that was wired. What model headset to you have exactly? There are some headsets that need to be wired to a controller for chat feature.

turtle Beach Stealth 300 Amplified Surround Sound Gaming Headset for Xbox One - Xbox One (Wired) this is the headset i currently have.

That one looks like it is amplified internally, which is what needs the battery. From what I can tell it has an amp inside to boost loudness. Very few good quality headsets use that tech, I can't think of any that do actually unless they are actually a wireless headset. The standard way to power headsets outside of the 3.5mm jack power is to use a USB dongle or a full add-on headphone amp.

Thanks, that headset broke, but i like the sound quality on it, but i dont want to pay the monry to go wireless. I will probably get a wired headset without that feature.
