I currently use the i5 4570 and enjoy many games that have quite large maps. Would upgrading to and i7 4790 make any difference or be a waste of money?

Solution
For gaming, i7 may not make any such performance increases as compared to the i5. Current gen games are not using more cores/threads hence i5 is more than enough to fulfill any gaming experience. With i7 we have two threads per core making it total 8 threads in 4 cores with hyper threading. Desktop apps, graphics rendering, video editing, CAD etc these are applications which take too much CPU resources hence i7/Xeon is recommended for them. But if you are building only gaming and normal desktop use, stick with i5 and save some bucks and put them into buying powerful GPU.

you would be wasting your money, as games right now don't require lots of multithreading where the i7 excels, i5 will be equal to i7 in 99% of games.

However, if you game stream/record and game then the i7 will help because that requires high multithreading to prevent cpu bottleneck.

Your best option would be to get a Broadwell 5th gen i7 in the future.

Not much if i say. The i5 enough to handle cpu bound game but the i7 will handle easily.
Quad-core i5 it's enough to handle game nowdays even the i5-2300 sandy bridge at top tier on cpu gaming hierarchy chart.
Your CPU will very very fine for gaming next 2-3 years :)
