Difference between Xeon E3, E5 & E7 Processors?

Intel xeon processors has three families: E3, E5 & E7
What is the difference between them?
And which among them is server cpu and which are desktop cpu?

Any of them can be either used as desktop or server CPU. The Xeon E3-12xx V3 series are well priced to be used as desktop processors.

Search for information about said CPU's in the link above. Each series has their own amount of cores/threads. Typically the E5 and E7 have more.

Thank you both for quick response. I am planning to buy xeon processor for my desktop update. They perform really well and sometimes even beat i7 cpus in huge margins in benchmark comparison. I hope it is a good idea to use xeon rather than i5 or i7.
So, E3-12xx V3 is good enough?

I checked up some more. These E series families have V2, V3, V4 at the end of the series. Is it version 2/3/4? Higher number is latest/better?

And, these xeons are not unlocked and cannot be over-clocked right?
So I don't have to buy a high-end mobo that supports over-clocking and buy a moderate level decent mobo?

High-end motherboards, or Z97 motherboards, are not just good for overclocking purposes. They are packed with good features, for example they might have proper audio cards or they might support SLI. I think It's important that you pick a motherboard that atleast supports SLI.

Ever that's correct. Xeon's can't be overclocked.

Thanks a lot for these mobo suggestions :)
I am using gigabyte since 8 years and no problem so far. So i thought ill buy gigabyte this time as well.
But to be honest, i dont know how to pick a mobo. I mean, there are hell lot of them.
I will check for LGA socket, max RAM, No. of mem and PCI channels & USB 3.0 for front side.
Is there anything else that matters and i should check before buying?
This is the first time i am building the PC on my own. So i am asking all these questions. :)

With a non-overclockable processor you don't have to be picky with the choice of motherboard, so go for the one that fits your budget. You can also list a budget and from there we will choose the best Gigabyte motherboard for you.

If you ever plan to use 2 Nvidia GPU's in one system, than you want an SLI compatible mobo.

Okay! I might use two GPUs. If not now, in future may be.
Budget for mobo is $100-$120 bro.
And if a better ASUS mobo comes within that budget than gigabyte, i have no problem buying ASUS. It is a badass mobo as well 😉

For an SLI capable motherboard, to pair with a locked CPU, you don't really need more than this.

The Asrock Z97 extreme3 is also another budget board that would work. Sometimes it is on sale, for less than the gigabyte board.

The first, second, and third generation E5 16xx CPUs all have an unlocked multiplier. My E5 1650 v2 is at 4.6Ghz right now and matches an 8700(k) in performance.
