[SOLVED] Different size module ram

Hi guys,

I would like to increase my 16 gb ram ( 2x 8gb ) . I was thinkng to buy a single 16 gb module , and in the future buy another 16 gb.
Can i use different size ram module ?
I'm open to suggestion

The always answer is - "Maybe".

It might work, it might fail.


But for your current RAM. You need to move the one in slot 3 to slot 4.
You want Slot 2 & 4, A2 and B2.

This is my personal experience, doesn't have to apply to anyone else.
I bought a 32 gig kit. Then I wanted to test it together with my old kit which was different timings, 16 gigs, different manufacturer of ICs. The only thing in common was DDR4 basically.
It worked for me. But of course at the slower 16 gig sticks speeds. Well, more correctly, timings.
But I had 4 sticks total. I don't know how AMD handles 3 sticks because no sane person should ever run uneven amount of sticks on a dualchannel platform. So I didn't test that.

I should also mention, I have overclocked RAM for 2-3 years. It isn't something you learn overnight. I had intimate knowledge of both sets of sticks because I had "played" with both for 1-2 months prior, in addition to the 6 months I had tinkered with the old kit.
I upgraded my system, new CPU that could handle higher RAM speeds so I was curious what I could achieve.
Let me tell you, stability testing 48 gigs wasn't fun. At all. It takes hours and hours. It is what most of your time goes to.

I verify with cpu-z and memory was Dual-channel.
I even open my case and i 'm using correct slots, i don't know why HWINFO tells Row 2 and 3.

I just realize thath ram was working at 2660 as Auto mode from bios , i just increase it to 3200. Am i wrong ?

I'm using my original kit ( 2x8gb ) in slots 2 and 4 ( like photo ) . I don't know why hwinfo call them row 2 and row 3

That's not what I'm asking.
It does not make much sense to increase ram if your not using all the ram you have now.
It would just be more ram sitting around doing nothing.

Sorry i misunderstood .
I use my pc for sound desing ( Abelton mostly ) and when i have some delay due to full ram usage.
I don't know if even 32 gb is enough

In theory you can add more ram.
In the real world it can sometimes turn out to be a mess.
I suppose the only way to know is to try it.
