The Southbridge is very flexible and can handle two SATA and four
PATA drives. If using an older OS, you can use up to four of the
six interfaces (as the hardware makes the four interfaces look
like PATA, even if you are using PATA and SATA drives - this
gets around the issue of finding drivers for SATA on an old OS -
select "compatible" mode in the BIOS if using something like Win98).
You can download the user manual from the Asus web site and read
it before the machine arrives. There are usually two sections in
the manual addressing this issue, and it shouldn't be a problem to
set it up. If you don't want to mess with the BIOS, you could
always get your system builder to do it for you - tell the builder
which OSes you use and how many drives you want to use, and the
builder can select the best choice for what you want to do.
The worst case scenario, is if you are trying to use more than four
drives on the Southbridge, plus dual booting a modern OS and an
older OS. This configuration may require visiting the BIOS before
each (alternate) OS boot, in order to take the OS selection
into account. With a single SATA and a single PATA drive, using
the "compatible" setting should be good enough for all the listed
Windows OSes.
