Digital to Analog?

I have a VGA-only monitor, and I was wondering if I could use my R9 290 (DVI-D only) with an adapter or something and make the setup work?

Which R9-290 card is it? Most R9-290s do not produce an analog display. The 'adapter' that comes with some cards doesn't convert analog (VGA) to digital (DVI). They just use the analog pins on DVI-I headers to pick up the analog signal. If your card doesn't have a DVI-I header, there is no analog (VGA) present.
DVI-I = digital and analog (I stands for integrated)
DVI-D = digital only
