Hi, I'm trying to use a seagate business nas as a pure 1-time backup device. I want to xfer many TB and then just disconnect it. There are USB 3.0 ports on the device but it doesnt seem like I can xfer files using that. My router is 100Mbs and thats not fast enough so I tried to set up a direct ethernet connection. I followed this guide to set up a DHCP server on the PC.
https://www.how2shout.com/how-to/co...ectly-to-pc-without-router-external-dhcp.html

Everything seems to be set up according to the guide. The NAS is assigned a new IP address and shows it has a gigabit connection to the "network". However, I cant ping the device. I turned off windows firewalls. I used IP scanner. I tried restarting the NAS. I'm not 100% sure on the assigned address but dont see why it would get any address if it was wrong. The DHCP IP range was 169.5.5.1 - 254. I think I remember the NAS IP being 169.254.5.52 255.255.0.0

Anything obvious I can check?

Don't mess with DHCP. Set a static IP on the PC, and a static IP on the NAS.

Okay but how will the nas get an IP if it isnt assigned? I can see the nas IP but I cant set it. Does it just revert to a default IP when not set?

Anyway I think I'm just going to get a gigabit switch. That way I can xfer files faster to multiple devices and bypass the router.
