Disabling a display, but not its audio

I got a new monitor, but I am using the same old sound system. My sound system only takes hdmi and optical audio as sources, so I have a hdmi cord coming out of my gpu for sound, and a displayport cable plugged directly into my monitor for viewing. My PC thinks I have 2 monitors connected. Now, I tried disabling the second display, because without it disabled, my mouse could travel far from my actual screen, but when I disabled it, I lost all sound from my soundbar. Is there any solution?

Set the displays to clone/duplicate instead of extend. That way you will not have the cursor leave the single display image it is processing.

But then I can only go up to 1080p. I can't use 1440p when I do that for some reason.

There is an option somewhere that says "hide resolutions that the monitor cannot display". Uncheck that box and go for it.
