I'm thinking to close Hyperthreading when I record videos within VirtualBox/VMware virtual machine running, I read some forum posts in other sites that hyperthreading causing some audio problems within some softwares, what I'm getting as a issue is sound crackling/repeating when windows 95 starts (startup sound)

so my question is disabling Hyperthreading from BIOS is a bad thing? in terms of stability or heat? as far as I know Hyperthreading is a optional feature in a i7 4790k CPU, I will enable it afterwards

also its voids warranty?

Thank you

Solution
Disabling hyperthreading will probably reduce heat output because you're disabling a significant portion of the active transistors on the CPU, and reducing its total throughput. It shouldn't cause any stability problems either, and will not void your warranty.

That said, you might try messing with CPU affinity in task manager to see if you can resolve your problems, before disabling it. By disabling HT you're effectively turning an i7 into an i5.

Thank you for quick reply Ecky, I will try doing that on windows task manager before disabling the feature. I will re-enable it when my recording done anyway, it was just made me worried because Computers parts are not something easily find on stores in my location due to limited/overpriced stocks, so I didnt want to void my warranty in case something happens which is safe to do as you said

thank you

The added threads from Hyper-Threading would actually be a benefit in VM situations - so unless you have a specific problem to address by disabling it, then I would leave it enabled. I've never heard of HT impacting audio...

In short, no, it's not a 'bad' thing, you just drop to a 4core/4thread CPU, negating most of the point of an i7 really.
As far as heat, it may have a minor (positive) impact. Stability though, no. It's either stable, or it's not - at stock speeds ,it will be.

No, disabling Hyper-Threading is done in your BIOS. You are not modifying the CPU in any way, therefore it will not void a warranty.

Thanks for your answer as well man, I know disabling the HT sounds a bit weird but I'm out of options since I tried many things to fix this annoying (and a very annoying one, caused me re-install the virtual OS like more than 5+ times, I wasnt sure) also Its glad to hear heat will be reduced even if its a minor impact , it is important for me since I have stock intel fan

I will post back here when I'm done with the results

Assuming your ambient temps are in 'normal' range and you haven't overclocked, the temperature difference between HT on & HT off should not be the difference of safe vs unsafe temps. The stock cooler is sufficient for stock speeds/temps. For the i7's, that includes HT being enabled.
