Disaster for Intel: Dell to use AMD CPUs

Nahhh.. not a disaster... this is good news :) Well not for Intel... but that's Intel's own fault.

See it's not the fact that Dell is releasing AMD desktops that spells disaster... it's the fact that Intel has dropped the Pentium name. Now THAT was a mistake.

That's what you think man. Dropping Pentium name is a good move, since Pentium IV has created too much bad critique surround its own name. Intel wants consumer to look at them with a fresh new look, not the company who keep squeezing every last Ghz out of the processor, but actually a leading chip designer and manufacturer. And beside, they have a brand new architecture, so cannot keep the name Pentium name anymore.

Also, so what if Dell offer new AMD-based computers? They sell like 40 millions computers last year, 2 millions laptop and desktop together doesnt make a scratch.

Ummm having owned and operated my own computer business let me tell you the Pentium name does not stand ill with consumers. Most consumers (the general population) ask the all too often and important question.. "What Pentium is this?"

It used to be a strong selling point for Intel. People asked for a Pentium they got a Pentium. Now people asking for a Pentium will get to choose from two systems that are not Pentiums.. obviously they'll choose the less expensive model... (AMD Sempron64/Athlon64).

Athlon also is a better brand name then Core. It's more widely known. It's like AMD losing the Radeon/ATi names for there products now that they have bought out ATi. It would have been a foolish move... so AMD opted to keep the ATi and Radeon brand names.

Most people don't care what the product is named. IMHO Preshott's were fine for most people as long as the PC wasn't in a dusty environment. For most people there is no discernable difference between a Prescott P4 and an AMD 64. NONE at all. For enthusiasts we look at how it's going to play games and so on and how hot it's going to run.

People have to understand that not every home user is an enthusiast and not every IT officer is an enthusiast and as long as a PC does a good job it's fine by them.

Furthermore most people won't blame problems on a particular brand of processor or component. If someone has a problem with a Dell they go out and buy a HP or something else. Most people wouldn't know a CPU if it was rammed up their pooper :)

Who cares about the OP's statement? Intel now has a superior product out there and once production ramps up they will have great success for sure.

NO! NO! NO! the mistake was to make the crap they called pentium 4 that they tried to shove down your throats knowing fully well that AMD had the K8 coming.

No one forces you to buy a Preshott P4 my friend.

You and every other person on this planet forgets that Prescott's weren't the only P4's out there. Northwood wiped the floor with the similarly priced competition!

2. I still have friends who think that buying AMD runs the risk of incompatibility issues. (Though that makes me wonder if they're using 2400 baud dial-up modems to check their e-mail on Prodigy too.)

& whats wrong with that?

My 300 baud moden that costed 56$ still works fine & compuserve just rocks.....NOT,,, heck I remember those days then the characters rolled across the screen man that was a hi-tech marvel.

Wake up bro... thats why AMD has intel in court.

Meh.

No one forced anyone to buy one. Given the opportunity AMD would have done everything that Intel did.

& you cant even bring yourself to say AMD,,, wow!!!

Well it would be plainly obvious to most people that AMD is the competition......

When I post on this forum I assume that people have a certain minimum knowledge of the subject and I don't feel that I need to talk to people like they're babies.
