Question Disk constantly rattling on Lenovo ThinkCentre M83 10AH ?

Hello,

I bought a second-hand Lenovo ThinkCentre M83 10AH-S1CM00 desktop computer with a fresh Windows 10 installed.

The computer works fine, but I notice the disk rattles constantly for several minutes after bootup. I couldn't find what application in Windows could cause that.

So, I booted it off a Linux Ubuntu USB pen-drive… and the same thing happens. So it looks like something to do with the hardware, not the OS.

I saw nothing in the BIOS that looked like some kind of automatic disk defragmention or antivirus.

Has someone else experience the same thing?

Edit: The disk goes silent if I remove the SATA data cable, and leave the power cable. So I suspect Lenovo's BIOS.

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

Make and model disk, capacity, how full?

Rattle likely a sign of a pending failure.

Do you have all important data backed up?

if you remove the sata cable, it not getting use.

The disk seems fine. The noise goes away if I leave the power cable and remove the data cable.

Since that disk activity also occurs when booting off a Ubuntu USB stick, I suspect some low-level app launched by the BIOS, ie invisible to the OS.
