This is a cross post by me, other post was on reddit.

Hello, im not sure how to better title this issue, but it first started happening around the time CS2 came out of beta.

Specs:
ASUS Prime X570-Pro
Ryzen 9 5900x
Gigabyte Aorus 3090
32GB DDR4
1x Solidigm p41 plus m.2 nvme 1TB
1x WD Black SN850x m.2 nvme 2TB
Corsair RM1000x PSU

Details:
Whenever im playing certain games (CS2 is the most consistent crasher, but also Assassins creed origins, or sometimes even project zomboid.) it will eventually crash. Now what crashes depends on what drive the game was installed on and played from. If its my boot drive, then my entire pc will either BSOD or suddenly apps will start to freeze until the entire pc is just a still frame of every application that was once running but completely unusable. The only way to fix it is to hard reset the pc (hold down power button until it shuts off. If the game was on a non boot drive, then it will crash just the game or sometimes the entire drive the game was installed on. CS2 specifically says an error along the likes of "Error reading from loaded packed store "Z:\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global", when i try to access this location. Im able to make it to "Z:\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\game\" but am unable to open any other folders inside as it says the disk is not present. When this crash does happen, I check "Disk Management" to see if the drives are recognized and roughly 80% of the time the drive the game was installed on becomes missing. This is fixed with a reboot.

Besides playing video games, the entire pc is always fine. Ive run LLM's on my pc for days on end that fully use up all the ram and vram and have not had a single crash. Using the PC in any manor besides gaming seems to be fine. Most games work fine aswell, its just a select few (but always CS2).

What Ive tried:

  • I was originally on linux, virtualizing windows and running into this same issue. Except the drive the VM was running on would crash.
  • I gave up on trying to fix it on linux and switched to windows 10. Had the same issue (fresh install).
  • Gave up on windows 10, switched to windows 11. Same issue.
  • Tried to purchase a new m.2 as i figured my drives were corrupt (if they werent then oh well more storage, still the same issue)
  • Tried to install windows on an external drive (same issue)
  • Swapped individual components, Motherboard, ram, gpu (same issue).
  • Reset mobo to default settings, disable XMP
  • Update GPU Drivers
  • Swapped thermal paste (no luck lol but needed to be done anyways)
  • Checked to see if my drives were failing by checking S.M.A.R.T data (they're all fine except for the unsafe shutdowns due to having to force reset every crash)
Please let me know of any potential troubleshooting steps or fixes that you may know of, Thanks.

Where did you source the installer for the OSes mentioned above?

ASUS Prime X570-Pro
What BIOS version are you on for your motherboard?

32GB DDR4
Can you elaborate on this ram kit?

Corsair RM1000x PSU
How old is the PSU in your build?

1x Solidigm p41 plus m.2 nvme 1TB
https://www.solidigm.com/support-page/product-doc-cert/ka-00099.html
See if your SSD's are pending any firmware updates.

1x WD Black SN850x m.2 nvme 2TB
Using WD's Dashboard, see if this drive is also pending a firmware update.

Out of curiosity, how is the airflow in your case? Are they blowing across the drives in your build? That also leads me to ask what your cases' make and model is and the number of fans and their orientation in the build?

Installer sources:

Debians ISO flashed onto a ventoy flash drive. OS Sourced from Debians website. When running windows VM's on Debain, windows 10 22H2 Iso from microsofts website was used.

For windows 10/11, I flashed a 16gb flash drive with microsofts offical media creation tool for both installations.

BIOS Version: 5003 (latest as of 10/31/23)

Ram:
2x kits of -
ADATA XPG SPECTRIX D41 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin SDRAM DDR4 3000 CL16 (PC4 24000) RGB Desktop Memory (AX4U300038G16A-DT41)

PSU:
Pretty dang old, 6-7 years old?

SSD updates:
WD needed an update, just updated it
Solidigm didnt need an update

Airflow: Ive got 9 fans UniFans in an Lianli O11D, the drives have heatskinks on them.

Any possibility it could be because of PCIE lane limitations? Im not too sure on this topic but ive got 20 pcie 4.0 lanes on the 5900x, 16 being taken by the 3090, each gen 4 drive takes 4 lanes? Not too sure but im currently seeing if running the games off a gen 4 drive limited to gen 3 speeds fixes the issue.

Its also really strange that sometimes im able to make it through an entire CS2 match without crashing while other times i crash on the start screen or mid match multiple times.
