Dismount Error When Transferring Files To External Drives

I get disconnected from the drives when transferring files from Laptop to External HDD's. At first I though maybe its because of a faulty hard drive. Not the case since its effecting other memory devices I have. I thought maybe its because of a faulty USB socket. Not so because its effecting the other one too. I don't even know where to begin. I'd appreciate anyone's help on this. Thanks.

Do these external disks have separate power supplies or are they being powered from USB? If USB, have you tried a powered hub?

Some do and others don't and yet it happens with all of them. Transfer speeds takes a sudden dip from 100MB per sec to 2 or 6MB per sec.
