Laptop would intermittently not switch backlight on when lid opened.

I would have to open and close lid a few times to engage.

Now it wont engage at all. When I run a magnet over the switch to simulate the lid, the screen flickers.

Ive replaced the inverter with no change.

My guess is its either the wiring between the mainboard and the inverter is faulty or the backlight itself is gone.

Any ideas ?

Solution

Your laptop uses a CCFL as a backlight. The problem is most likely that the backlight needs to be replaced. You can either replace the whole LCD or take the LCD apart and replace just the backlight. As I said, it is usually possible but rather tricky. When I did it I had to solder the old wires onto the new CCFL. The part is cheap (usually ~$10), so it is worth a shot.
Can you faintly see the picture on the screen? It should be pretty obvious if the only thing not working is the backlight. If you can't see any picture, replace the cable. If you can, it might be the CCFL in the LCD. Replacing this is tricky but usually possible.

I can faintly see the picture. The LCD cable is fine. Im wondering if:

  • The backlight is gone
The pink and white cables to the backlight are gone.

You could check the output with a volt meter.[/quotemsg]

I have no voltmeter.

I guess I could buy a voltmeter and soldering iron and start a new career/hobby!

I geuss i have to choose between €40 for whole new screen. or a soldering iron and new bulb.
