Question Display cuts out and all fans max speed on Rust in MAIN MENU ONLY?

Basically the title, I will start Rust and load into the main menu. From then it's like a rush to join a server because if I don't, my display will go black, and all my fans will go max speed. The only way to restart the computer is to use the power button. This has been happening for a LONG time, but I'm tired of it. It only does this on Rust, and only in the main menu of the game. Once I'm in a server, it is fine which makes no sense. I checked my GPU temperature and its getting pretty hot in the main menu, about 89 degrees. Pulling about 120W also. However, I did a stress test full load and had similar results except my computer never lost display or anything. I just don't get how being in the main menu makes it do this. I have tried a lot of stuff over the years....yes, years. The amount of time before my display cuts out in the main menu is random. Sometimes its almost instant as I get in the menu, sometimes it takes a minute or two. I just want to play the game. Any help is appreciated.

EVGA 700W Bronze, 5yrs since built

Very heavily use for gaming

Plenty of storage space. Rust is on my SSD.

5 year old PSU - heavily used....

As I understand your posts and the posted problems that PSU is a likely suspect.

Look in Reliability History/Monitor for error codes, warnings, and even informational events that correspond with the display going black, etc..

Overall, increasing numbers of errors and varying errors are symptomatic of a faltering/failing PSU.

Do you have another known working PSU that can be swapped in? Remember to use only the cables that come with that PSU.

I do not have another PSU. The weird thing is it that it only does this on Rust. Also, the PSU is actually 7 years old, so is the rest of my parts.

Reading back:

"From then it's like a rush to join a server because if I don't, my display will go black, and all my fans will go max speed."

For the record: what server? Link?

Use Task Manager and Resource Monitor to observe system performance. Use both tools but only one tool at a time.

Boot up, open the tool window, and simply wait until the system is stable with nothing happening. No backups, updates, "phoning home" etc. by any installed apps.

Then start Rust. What happens? It may take a few attempts and a bit of "trial and error" to find something.

If this is specific to Rust when using the main menu, what is the frame rate when in the menu? Can you cap it somehow if it's trying to push your GPU as hard as possible?

It's extremely likely you're having a power problem when the FPS runs away. It's a combination of very high frame rate and maximum power usage. This could be related to the card or PSU, but I'd generally lean towards the card as your stress test didn't cause the same problem.

If it's something you're comfortable doing replacing thermal pads and paste on the video card would be a good idea.

If Rust doesn't have the ability to cap frame rate in menus you should absolutely use something like RTSS to cap it.
