I build a new rig and soon as i installed my GPU my screen went all distorted and the system restarts and sometimes recovers this happened randomly. I have read a lot about this online... I dont think its my hardware i have changed my PSU tested my GPU on another system, i have tested my RAM and changed my RAM , but it could be my motherboard but my integrated graphic card works fine no crashes at all, i have updated my drivers and BIOS and even re-installed windows but i still get Blue screen.

when i looked at my minidump files using bluescreenview it read "Caused by Driver: dxgkrnl.sys" also at the bottom there are some lines highlighted in read "atikmpag.sys", "dxgmms1.sys". ... dont know what they mean.

my Rig (not overclocked)

Intel Core i7 4770K Haswell

MSI Z87 G45 GAMING (MS-7821) BIOS v1.6

Kingston DDR3 16GB RAM 1333 ECC

PSU RM 850w Corsair

H.D.D 2TB WD Green

GPU AMD R9 290 (default setting not overclocked)

my system is not overheating my CPU is under 30C my GPU is between 40 to 60C

this is my first time building a custom PC is there some sort of process i missed out are there some changed i need to change in the BIOS like ram timing, speed or something .

i did a lot of searching but all i could find was the same info nothing helped does anyone know how to fix this error? are there some changed i need to make somewhere in windows or bios

i also tried installing directx end-user runtime update that did not help. another thing is that it never crashes when im playing games i played total war shougn 2 for hours not crashed once but soon as i started browsing around windows and internet it crashed

dxgkrnl.sys = directx graphics kernel (microsoft)
atikmpag.sys= graphics dirver for graphics card (AMD)

your game will know how to talk to directx
directx knows how to talk to the graphics card.

so all your issues are with talking with your graphics card. Generally there are several things that can go wrong. Not enough power to the graphics card. (not likely unless you forgot to plug in the extra power connectors to the graphics card)
or more likely: You installed windows, did a bunch of updates and did not reboot. then you installed your graphics driver and later rebooted
now some time later you try to use a game or hardware accelerated browser or desttop and get the bluescreen.
most likely you had a pending update of the graphics driver before you installed the graphics driver. When you rebooted the first graphics driver completed its install of its second graphics file. Now you have a mix of builds of the 3 AMD drivers for your card.

you need to remove all three drivers from the hidden driver store on your machine and reinstall them. if you just remove the driver the plug and play system will detect that your removed them and it will go to the hidden driver store on your manchine and it will reinstall them a few seconds after you uninstall them.

two ways: go to contol panel and disable the plug and play, uninstall the drivers, reboot, install the new drivers, reboot. and enable the plug and play install of drivers again.

or you can open a admin command prompt and use the pnputil.exe command
pnputil.exe -e (this will list all the oem drivers, find the 3 ATI drivers in the list and remove each one)
(Oh, you can use the same command to confirm you have mixed versions.)

here is what it looks like on my machine:

Published name : oem46.inf

so i have 4 drivers in my driver store I would want to remove
I would use the commands

pnputil.exe -d oem8.inf
pnputil.exe -d oem40.inf
pnputil.exe -d oem45.inf
pnputil.exe -d oem26.inf

note: i actually had 8 versions of the drivers in my drive store, different dates and builds
if the signer name is microsoft it is a generic version of the driver, you most likely want
the ones signed by Advanced Micro Devices, inc

or delete and reinstall the AMD graphics driver setup and reboot

i tried disabling PnP and uninstalled and re-installed by drivers again but that didn't help ..my pc runs okay in safe mode maybe there is a driver issue in normal windows.

so which of these do i remove

Well the issue is going to be in your graphics driver. Lots of people are having problems with the new faster cards and the current drivers.
Even the new beta drivers were having issues.

you can run dxdiag.exe and check the display tab, it will show the date and version number for your graphics driver you have installed.

my AMD driver is version 13.251.0.0 with a date 12/6/2013
and the only issue i had was I had hangs in the driver. The only way I was able to prevent the hang was to disable the graphics driver high definition sound support in control panel device manager. I think it just changed the timings so I don't hit a deadlock in the driver as often.
(it does not fix the bug, just made it so I don't hit it every 2 hours while playing a game)

basically if there is anything wrong with the graphics driver it will bugcheck in the graphics driver or the component that talks to the graphics driver
in this case directx driver. If the graphics driver hangs, directx will call a bugcheck because the graphics driver stopped working.

I put back my old motherboard and CPU with my new GPU and power supply so far i haven't experience any display driver failure.
