I have:

Windows 8.1 64 bit Home edition
AMD FX 8350 Either-Core Processor
AMD 7870 graphics card
ASUSTek M5A99FX Pro R2.0 MB

I have checked drivers, I have checked memory (ram), the graphics card works fine as we tried it in a different CPU.

Every time during (not at the start) of a game or of launching Adobe Photoshop the screen will black out and say "A Display driver has stopped responding" or the screen freezes for a second, or it freezes completely with a torn up blue screen (not BSOD) and I have to force restart.

Any help would be amazing :)

Download GPU-Z and check your card's temperatures.

If the card is running hot that's a possible cause of the 'driver not responding' error.

If not, ensure Drivers have been thoroughly uninstalled and download the latest (non-beta) drivers from AMD's website.

This actually brings up something I forgot to mention I have checked temps. My motherboard gets up to about 45C while idle and up to 52C when in games, and for some reason the 2 fans I have show they are going at 4000+rpm and then to 68000+ rpms then returns to normal after a second. My CPU stays around 35C I will check on the GPU right now.

I also had a Nvidia GPU before this AMD which had a similar problem with the display adapters crashing so we got a new card (the amd) and still having the same issue. I did infact make sure I removed all of the Nivida GPU drivers before installing the AMD ones.

Agreed but this happens about every 5 minutes.

Example time line:

Start up CPU
Launch League of Legends
Play for 10 minutes
Black Screen/ Freeze ("Display Adapters Have stopped working")
Play for 5 minutes
Black Screen/ Freeze (doesn't even say anything about the adapters)
Play for 5 minutes
Computer freezes with broken blue/black screen and has to force reset the computer.

Same thing happened exactly with the Nvidia Graphics and AMD

The crashes annoyed the crap out of me, so much so that I carried on using the old Nvidia card for nearly ten months when a reasonably stable driver was released. Still have to run without CCC installed though as that still causes BSoD's.

Alright so I measured the GPU temps ect. I ran FarCry 3 on ULTRA at 52 FPS avg so it is a lot more taxing than League of Legends. It was about 58-60C temp. So it doesnt seem to unreasonable.

PSU output is 600W which is more than enough as they system takes around 475-500W. Reccom PSU for graphics card as well is 500W.

I tested the PSU and everything seems fine.

The clock speed on the GPU is 300.0 MHz
Memory clock is 150.0 MHZ

During the run it actually didnt mess up and I played Far Cry for about 30 minutes. So im not sure what is causing the issue.

Those temperatures seem normal.

How did you determine you Wattage usage? Is this figure while components are under load or idle?

If at all possible try the Graphics Card in a different system and see if the problems recur. If they don't then the Graphics Card itself is not at fault, meaning it's either power-related or driver / registry.

Do you have CCC installed?

Well its actually my girlfriends CPU (its right next to mine) I have put the GPU into my CPU and it works fine with no errors (I use a Nvidia GTX 780TI) i just uninstalled my drivers and put the AMD version shes using and it works perfect. I ran league of legends no errors no display crashes. I also have an ASUS mb but not AMD processor and mb format/ram. I used some program earlier to test CPU wattage under stress and idle and it ran fine. If you have a better test to run id take it.

Yeah I have Catalyst Control Center Installed.

Have you tried uninstalling it and running with just the driver installed?

I have not but I will give it a go :)

That is what I kept being told by various AMD fans about my card, strange then how 14.2 seems to have "fixed" it if it is a faulty card don't you think?

Well I have had the card for about 2 years, and if I stick it in my CPU it works fine so I dont understand why its not working for hers. I have Windows 7 64-bit and she has windows 8.1 64-bit no clue if that makes a difference

Apart from Driver Corruption or a program that is incompatible with your Drivers the error you are seeing usually indicates an overheating GPU. Since you're running games and Photoshop driver incompatibility seems very unlikely.

How's ventilation in your Girlfriend's case? Be sure to monitor the GPU during heat testing by being alt-tabbed and watching GPU-Z's or your temperature monitoring software's heat readout and fan-speed readout.

Confirm that your Girlfriend's PCI-E x16 slot is free from dust and other debris.

You could try artificially increasing fan-speed on the Graphics Card with MSI Afterburner to see if that helps.

The max temp the GPU gets to is about 58C MAYBE 60C but around 58C.

ALRIGHT! So new breakthrough which I hope eliminates a few things! The computer freezes in BIOs which is technically before the GPU/OS is loaded in which only leaves the PSU RAM CPU and MB right?

The GPU is the one rendering the BIOS screen.
Unless you have the monitor plugged into the MOBO video, then the CPU is rendering it.

Recently I have uninstalled Windows 8 and done a fresh install of windows 8 and loaded windows 8.1. So no chances of old drivers still being kept. Would the motherboard cause display drivers to stop responding ? The only thing I really haven't tried yet is setting the ram timings and updating the MB. Would either of these even be related to the display drivers crashing?
