Display Driver Stopped Responding Constantly

Hey guys.

Apologies to make a thread you've probably seen a million times.
I didn't want to post this but I've researched all over for a fix and nothing has helped me, I'm at my whits end with this error.

Display driver stopped responding... Every day, at least 5 times. When i'm playing a game, when i'm recording some gameplay, when i'm just normal browsing or watching videos. Any scenario and this happens. I've done Memory diagnostic multiple times, with nothing found. I've switched to older vido drivers with no luck, latest video drivers still get the error.

I've used DDU to do a clean install on multiple occasions. Of course while using safe mode.
I've tried doing the TdrDelay Regedit trick and had no luck, in fact it made the problem worse.

Windows is up to date. Drivers are up to date. No memory errors.
I'm out of ideas... I'm literally at the point where i'm just gonna dump my GPU and replace it.

The only thing I have not tried, is testing the GPU in another system. Which I can't do since I have only 1 system.

Regardless of finding no RAM errors. I still bought 2x 4gb sticks from Amazon since
the most common cause I could find in my research was the RAM being faulty.

So I can 100% rule out the RAM later today when I install it.

I discovered a Video memory stress test program to use.

I've ran the full length test and it passed with 0 errors found.
Still waiting for my RAM to arrive which will be today (Courtesy of amazon prime)
so I can't 100% rule it out until then. However I still find it unlikely to be the issue are passing numerous memory tests.

Am I missing something?

RAM is not very likely the cause of the issue, more common is a video card issue or power supply issue or drivers. Try a clean Windows setup on a spare drive if you have one, see if system is OK then. You would need to try the card in another system or another card in yours to rule that out, unless RAM fixes things for you.

Thanks for the response.

The new RAM has arrived, been in my system for about 25 minutes now. I ran a little test to see if I would get the error, opened multiple YouTube windows with videos playing while loading a game up. No error thus far. Recording gameplay while playing videos and no error thus far.
I'll keep playing around with it for now. But I may have discovered another problem in this process, that being the Thermal armouring on my mobo being very hot which I noticed when I switched out the RAM. Cpu temps seem normal however.

More to the point, problem is not resolved and now I need to find a way to get this fixed. It's making it impossible for me to play games, browse and record gameplay for my YouTube channel which is very important to me.

How likely is it to be the GPU? I'm not gonna go buy another GPU without being 100% sure that's the problem.
I'm also very concerned about the thermal armour on motherboard getting quite hot, like too hot to hold a finger on for longer than a couple seconds. Does this perhaps give a clue to the cause?

Test the card in another system that can run it, if it has the same issue, it's the card. Only way to know for sure. Try a clean Windows setup, another power supply, those may be the issue also.

Okay, so I ran it another my partners PC and I didn't get any errors this time around. Just, the PC was quite slow but I guess that's just because i'm use to the speed of my PC with hers being a few years older than mine.

Anyways, this rules out the GPU? Right?
Now we're looking at PSU and OS? I'll try to a fresh install tonight if so.

There is heat being thrown out my PC. Much more than normal. I'm using an H55 Corsair Cooler and my CPU temps are what seem to be normal varying from 40 - 55 under load on a game. Yet, heat is still emanating from the top. It seems to be coming from the motherboard as I previously mentioned I was concerned about the thermal armouring on the board. That is 100% not normal for my PC. I can cancel the heat out if I run my top fan at max speed which is incredibly loud. It's one of them huge exaust fans on the Antec 1200 V3 case.

Test the card in another system that can run it, if it has the same issue, it's the card. Only way to know for sure. Try a clean Windows setup, another power supply, those may be the issue also.

Okay, I tried running off one my second drive that still has Win7 installed and the crashes / error is still there.

However, I turned off my AMD Turbo Core and now it seems to be.... okay.
The boost increases my stock 3.5ghz to 4.1ghz with a voltage boost from 1.1750v to 1.2750.
I wonder, could this have caused the problem. Because if it has, I'm gonna be very annoyed.

I think it may have leviated the problem. I was playing / recording all night with no issues with my turbo core disabled. I'm still going to assume the PSU is somewhat faulty and replace it, i've also already purchased a new GPU. It should arrive tomorrow. So, i'll get back to this thread tomorrow and give an update.

Buying a new PSU will take a little longer as i'll need to buy it out right, i've bought the GPU via a weekly payment method on a site I use very often and trust which is why I can replace that faster. So, if tomorrow after installing the new GPU I still get the error, does this mean for sure that the PSU is the error?

New GPU will be MSI R9 380 4gb.

I doubt personally that the PSU is the problem. I am running a far heavier load than you as I've overclocked my system on less wattage and I resolved my problem loaded with a 15% overclock just by running a reg. clean, re-installing direct x, and adding a tdr delay and updating to the latest drivers and that was all. No hardware changes were necessary. Therefore since you are running a lighter load, with a cpu of a lower tdp it is more probable that you just need to de gunk your OS.

However I have already tried this. The GPU was tested in another system, I've used DDU to reg clean drivers and re-install multiple times. I've now also tested the error on my spare drive with Win7 and the error was still there. The TdrDelay like I said doesn't work for me, it makes things worse giveing a "Unable to acces graphics hardware" error on every game I run. With both timings of 8 or 10. As far as I know, DirectX comes with Windows update for win10 so I wouldn't know hot "re-install DirectX" as you say. The only thing that has worked so far, has been turning off the turbo core feature. Which would lead me to believe the PSU may be faulty. Not only that, I also mentioned heat problems earlier on which have now vanished with turbo core turned off.

I prefer wise registry cleaner personally because it has a lot more features but they are all pretty similar. In my experience premium ones were more thorough but the freebies got the job done this time; if you run a couple you will probably find that it only picks up one or two entries out of hundreds that the other one missed; hardly a hair's difference between them.


I'd have to see to believe that your gpu is actually faulty; or your psu.

I've done as you said. In the order that you did it in. It found quite a lot things to fix in the registry this time around.
I guess now we wait...
