Question Display Settings

Just bought a refurb Dell laptop, 5640. Display settings are set for the recommended, 2560 x 1600. Many of my application's GUI's are simply too small to use. Changing resolution does help, BUT... Why upgrade to more expensive HD display if it can't be used? Anyone else have this problem?

Typically on laptops you would use scaling to get a decent experience on the desktop. When consuming media you could potentially benefit from the higher resolution.
