Display works fine when graphics card isn't connected, but stays black once it gets power.

So I just built my first PC and I started everything up and I got to the BIOS where I noticed it didn't read I had a graphics card. It is a sapphire Nitro Radeon R9 Fury and I only had one of the ports getting power but when I plugged the second one in the fans start spinning and it turns on but the display doesn't show up on my monitor. When I first turned it on it beeped a couple times but I'm not sure what it meant. Please help!
