I have 6 different LCD monitors that I have been acquiring over the past few years. I just got an 5770 and I was curious to try the eyefinity thing. I understand that I must use the displayport, but 5 of which are DVI/VGA, and 1 32" 1080p LCD TV with HDMI. Has anyone one had this same issue, and found a DP2DVI adapter to work?

Here is the adapter I was looking at getting:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812120613&cm_re=displayport_to_dvi_adapter-_-12-120-613-_-Product

I was planning on using the LCD TV flanked by 2 Acer 23" displays that are all native 1920x1080 resolution.

Solution
DVI->HDMI definitely won't work because you still have the limited TMDS issue, one must remain VGA. I know for those who extended it via DP->VGA that they had to set the VGA as the highest resolution monitor;

http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17468

and it looks like another person in the forum had to do it by changing resolution to get it to recognize correctly;

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/279385-33-success-eyefinity-passive-adapter

Looks like it's a little more finicky, since it doesn't have the same level of plug-n-play EDID detection awareness as DVI.

whats the difference ?

please show me the image of an active DP adapter :)

I've been using this type of adapter in my Eyefinity set up for about a month now. (see my post above)

Works great.

I've only encountered three complications (which may be driver related -- currently have the Ati Catalyst 10.2 driver package installed):

(1) Occasionally my mouse pointer will "glitch out" as I move from window to window - the seems to occur roughly once a week, and is easily fixed with a reboot.

(2) Speaking of reboots, usually (but not always) the DP connected monitor will not be detected on Win7 startup. To fix, I need to unplug/replug the DP monitor in order for the 5870 to refresh the signal.

(3) Roughly every 3-4 hours the DP connected monitor will 'reset' -> goes black for ~5 seconds and then comes back on. Annoying (especially when it happens during gameplay) but its very short lived.

Otherwise the DP to VGA adapter has been working great. Eyefinity gaming is quite enjoyable Its also wonderful to have 3 monitors worth of desktop to place various apps when working.

I'm using the Accell displayport to VGA dongle. DP-VGA B101C-001B. Works like a charm. First unit I received had flickering issues. Amazon prime sent me another overnight. Very pleased, especially because it didn't punch a hole in my wallet. about $25. BTW this adapter is AMD eyefinity validated dongle and is in fact an ACTIVE powered adapter.

Hmm, I've read through this thread twice but I am still confused as to what I need to make my setup work:

My old setup was like this (nvidia 8800 GT and 8400 GS):

1st connection, 22" LCD monitor on DVI of 8800gt
2nd connection, 17" LCD monitor on DVI of 8400gs
3rd connection, 46" LCD TV on DVI of 8800gt (had a 25' HDMI [TV end] to DVI [Computer end] cable)
Both the 1st and 3rd connections are duplicates (clones) of each other. The 2nd connection is a desktop extension for when I'm at my desk and need more desktop space.

So now that both those cards are long gone and replaced with my 5850, I need to do something like this:

1st connection, 22" LCD monitor on DVI of 5850
2nd connection, 17" LCD monitor on DVI of 5850
3rd connection, 46" LCD TV on ???????? of 5850 (now has a 25' HDMI [TV end] to HDMI [Computer end] cable that I spent $45 from monoplace.com on...)
Both the 1st and 3rd connections should be duplicates (clones) of each other. The 2nd connection should be a desktop extension.

I had at first tried the 3rd connection with an HDMI connection which did not work and I then discovered that the HDMI port is shared with one of the DVI ports, so without much research I just picked up a cheap $13 CDN DP to HDMI adapter on eBay (passive I'd imagine) which also does not work with the 46" TV (well, it works, but CCC won't let me activate 3 monitors at once still).

So, after reading this thread a few times, I think I have these two options, and would like someone to let me know if I am right about these two options:

1) Remove my 25" HDMI cable that I just put in last week for this 5850 for my 46" TV in the other room and put back my DVI --> HDMI 25" cable that I had before with my Nvidia 8800 GT and 8400 GS cards (grr, ~2 hour job, but I'm willing to do it) and get a cheap passive DP to VGA adapter for the 17" (2nd) connection [this is just a desktop extension that I use for work occasionally). The 1st 22" connection will be on DVI and the 3rd 46" TV will be back on a DVI --> HDMI connection to my TV.

...or...
2) Just get an certified-to-be-working ( http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/Pages/eyefinity-dongles.aspx ) active DP to HDMI dongle and plug it in and away I go.

There's no way I can use an AMD certified passive dongle with my setup, right? It has to be a more expensive active dongle?

The funny thing is I have an old ATI Radeon X1300 that I would LOVE to use for just the 17" monitor, BUT, the darn thing, when installed, stops Battlefield Bad Company 2 (and likely other games) from even starting, likely because there are no Windows 7 x64 certified drivers for it (WDDM 1.1 or whatever) from ATI or MS (I think it only does Vista's WDDM 1.0)... and my Nvidia 8400 GS card's fan is shot so it doesn't spin and the 8800 GT has already been sold 🙁

Anyways, if anyone could just help clarify my two options that would be great.

And also, if someone could tell me the CHEAPEST place to get a known-to-be-working DP to HDMI active dongle or a DP to VGA (passive?) dongle in Canada that would be great... willing to use eBay too, not in a huge rush...

Thanks in advance!

Hi i have 3 NEC 22" LCD`s (1680 X 1050)only VGA + ATI Radeon 5770 . So i used a passive DP to VGA and 2 DVI to VGA adapters to connect my EYEINFINITY . IT WORCKS !!! No need of active DP !!! :bounce: :) :) :) :) :bounce:

I'm also using a 5770. You cannot use 2 DVI and an HDMI because of the signal. You absolutely MUST use an active DP adapter for 3 displays. Your best bet is you buy DP2VGA from accell, since it's about $25 on amazon and in healthy supply. Here's what you can do... DVI (your TV) DVI DP-VGA or HDMI (your TV) DVI DP-VGA. This is quite affordable.

You may use a passive dongle only IF you're using 2 displays or less.

Ok, well, where can I get a passive DP to VGA adapter that works in Canada? We can't order from Amazon.com in Canada, and I doubt Amazon.ca has it (will check later though...). I'm in the Toronto area...

ok, this is my expirience:

Running Win 7 Pro 32 bit.
card 5770
I have 2 - 24" monitors @ native 1920 x1200 resolution & 1 21" monitor at 1680 x1050 resolution.

My hook up is:

DVI-VGA 24"
DP - VGA 24"
DVI-VGA 21"

I hooked up all monitors while computer was running and everything seemed to be ok. I switched resolution for all monitors to 1680x1050. Then i started BBC2 but the game did not give me option for higher resolution. At this point i restarted the computer.

After the restart for some reason the DP-VGA is not able to receive a full signal and is defaulting to 640 x 480 resolution. The whole setup is off.

I will try to switch the DVI - VGA to simply DVI connections and keep DP to VGA.

Does anyone know what is going wrong with this setup??

Thanks

Are you using an active DP to VGA adapter or a passive one? If you are using an active one I sure would like to know where you got it b/c I'm looking for one. If you read above, it's a hot topic. Some people say they've had luck with the passive adapter but I think the recommendation is an active one which may be why yours isn't working if you have a passive one that isn't getting power from a USB port.

Some people have posted links towards an active adapter by Dell but it leads you to an inactive page or something. Nothing shows.. I've looked all over Amazon, Newegg, and Google Products but I haven't had any luck finding an active adapter... If anyone has good link toward an active adapter I sure would like to see it.

Im trying to setup 3x1 with 3 Acer P225HQ's to a Asus 5870 but im having no luck so far 🙁

Im trying to connect them as below

HDMI->DVI
DP->DVI
DVI

I cant figure out where im going wrong...

OK here goes. I have a 37" HDTV along with two 22" monitors, and a 5830. I understand i can only use two DVI>HDMI (card to display) connections, but would it be possible, for the third, to use a DP>DVI>VGA type set up? what i have is a passive DP>DVI coversion, and then a DVI>VGA conversion. I imagine it wouldn't fly and I'd be better off just buying a DP>VGA adapter, but I figured I'd see if anyone had a more firm idea 😉 thanks!

As I understand it, for eyefinity you must use the displayport. the DVI and HDMI are parallel and use the same resources. Everything I have read states the adapter must be active or powered. In short I know that no combination of passive adapters that I tried (DVI>HDMI or DVI>VGA ever worked for me.

Rather than investing money in an active adapter, I spent the money on a second card. I have a 32" HDTV flanked by 2 19" LCD displays.

I've solved my problem and connected to 4 monitors. Thought I would give you my experience since I have been helped by all your emails and advice

Here is what i had

1) gateway fx6831 with
2) One ATI Radeon 5850 card
3) 4 samsung monitors (two on top, two below)

My problem was i couldn't get the display port to work for my third monitor since i had 2 monitors connected via DVI - and a passive dongle. (i.e i could get two monitors to work but not the third) Having come to this site it was clear i could get 3 monitors connected but I needed to buy an active dongle and switch to VGA on all three monitors.

Also after reading the ATI manual and FAQ (see links below), they talk about connecting to 3-5 monitors. I took a chance and got all four of my monitors to work

Here is how:

Had to buy a Accell UltraAV K087B-005B DisplayPort to 3x DVI-D Single-Link Multi-Monitor Adapter
cost $179. This allows me to connect 3 monitors via DVI to the display port (i currently only have two connected)
I have two others connected via DVI making a total of 4 monitors. Theoretically I could add one more and have 5 monitors.

Performance :
-My top two monitors are connected via DP and Accell adapter - highest resolution available is 3840x1024@60Hz
-My two other monitors have higher resolution

Suggestions:
1) do not have any VGA cables connected to your monitor (only DVI)
2) do not ask an of the salespeople at Fry's for a DP dongle (they will only confuse you with their misplaced self-confidence)
3) start with the accell and connect your monitors via the accell adapter only (i.e only after you get this to work, add the other monitors to your ATI Radeon card.

Negative: the Accell UltraAV has limited documentation and limited FAQ's - but it works just fine (so long as you don't have any VGA cables connected to your monitor)

I have

5850..

1. DVI -> VGA -> 24" Mointer
2. HDMI -> 26" TV
3. DisplayPort -> DVI -> 24" Mointer

But, this still wont let me use all three at the same time!! 🙁

I can use any two at same time.

Im lost to why it wont.
