DisplayPort to HDMI

So I bought a 144hz monitor not too long ago and I have been using a standard HDMI cable which can only support up to 85hz. I have looked into buying a DVI or DisplayPort cable however my PC only has an HDMI port. My question is if I buy a DisplayPort cable and run that from my monitor into and HDMI adapter into my PC will it retain 144hz or will it drop back to 85hz

It depends on what GPU you have. Older GPUs don't use newer HDMI standards and would not support high refresh rates over 1 cable.

As Stuart_12 said what is your GPU? Also what revision is your HDMI Cable (if it was not included with the monitor). And what monitor is it?
