DMA, or not DMA?

Can Windows NT support two devices on the same IDE channel, one DMA capable
and the other not? Does the ATAPI driver notice and use DMA where
appropriate?

Thanks,
Paul DS.

yes it can. To get sure about it, is better to install the chipset drivers.
I had an intel motherboard and it worked faster with the intel drivers.

Hi Paul,

I actually replied to this question when you first posted it, but it appears the
newsgroup server I'm connected to managed to 'lose' it :-(

DMA access on a 'per device' basis is not available in NT 4.0 using the
Microsoft supplied ATAPI driver. Other chipset specific OEM drivers may be more
advanced and be capable of such actions, but I haven't personally seen any. For
a rundown of what is available for DMA on NT 4.0 see:

A quick clarification:

When I said "I haven't personally seen any." I was refering to OEM chipset DMA
drivers capable of 'per device' DMA transfers - I KNOW (and I'm sure the
originator of this question does to) that there are several chipset specific DMA
drivers available for NT 4.0 that can replace the Microsoft supplied ATAPI driver.
