Hello all. I am having a big problem with this.
I am trying to use a specific DNS, but when I enter it I loose all internet connection. I can't get mail, load pages in Chrome or Explorer, I get the 'DNS Probe Finished No Internet' error.I can change my DNS to other DNS' but this one I can't. I really need help with this, I have tried all the guides out there to reset and flush but it's not really that I can't use any DNS just some I can't. I hope someone knows how to help me, thank you! :)

Hello Micheladaines,

The DNS server is the main part of an internet connection. If you enter one and you lose all internet, it means that DNS server does not work. For the easiest result, try using your router as a DNS server by entering the local IP of 192.168.x.x depending on what router you have, or if you are using a Windows machine, select "Select DNS automatically". Cheers,

IisGamer

Hello IisGamer and nigelevey. I am trying to use 209.177.145.30
I know that it is working for others, it's Unlocator's DNS and it looks like I am the only ( or one of the few ) that is doesn't work for.
I can use 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4 fine, it is just that 209.177.145.30 makes my pc lose connection to the internet.

Leave it at 8.8.8.8 and make sure everthing works.

Then from the command prompt use the NSLOOKUP command to test sites.

When you do nslookup xxx.xx.xx
It will use your default and should work
What you want to test is nslookup xx.xx.xx 209.177.145.30

You may get different ip addresses and that is not always a issue but if it does not respond at all or you get a error then you have a problem.

It may be restricted to certain users or certain isp customers. It does not respond for me.

gbb0330, That's why I don't understand it, other people can use it I just can't, the support at Unlocator says I need to ask my isp and they tell me, the can't and won't help me cause they have given me a dns I have to use, so using other dns is my own problem. I have pinged it with the support guys, didn't respond.

I can ping it from Orange ISP France so the service is up, it may well be a limitation your end with your ISP.

I have changed it before to Unlocators old DNS and that worked. so I can't undertand why tis isn't working for me unless my Isp has blocked for my ip adress maybe.

Uhm I don't understand what you want me to test?
I'll write nslookup in cmd, then what do I write there?

ok I wrote
> nslookup www.unlocator.com
Server: unlocator.com
Addresses: 104.20.24.130
104.20.25.130
Aliases: www.unlocator.com

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to www.unlocator.com timed-out
is that right?
What does that tell me? what can I use it for?
I really don't know about this

now I am confused because it appears you have set your DNS to 104.20.24.130 and not 209.177.145.30.

Do one that you know will work like
nslookup www.tomshardware.com 8.8.8.8

You can then compare what one that works looks like.

The server that is in the top of the display is the DNS server. You will then get the results from the dnslookup in messages below. It will vary a bit because of tricky things sites like tomshardware does. You will see multiple addresses and domains that all map.

After that do
nslookup www.unlocator.com 8.8.8.8

and
nslookup www.unlocator.com 209.177.145.30

My DNS is set to 8.8.8.8 as you told me to.
I just ran the nslookups you told me with my dns set to 8.8.8.8
" C:\WINDOWS\system32>nslookup www.tomshardware.com 8.8.8.8

This is what I get. as you can see the last one isn't working for me 🙁

This is what you put in your previous post. My confusion is how you could have set your DNS to 8.8.8.8 and it says your server is unlocator.com.

"> nslookup www.unlocator.com
Server: unlocator.com"

In the ones you explicitly keyed in the 8.8.8.8 it told you the server was google-public-dns-a.google.com. That is what you should see when you do not override the DNS server on the NSLOOKUP command and your default dns set to 8,8,8,8.

Not sure if you will ever know why. Someone is blocking your access to that server. It is getting timeouts.

In general you want to use the DNS server that has the lowest latency to your house and because 8.8.8.8 is actually a bunch of machines located in many cities it tends to be the best.

If your issue is that the DNS server you want is resolving the ip to something different then you are going to have to get creative. In the worst case you can edit the host file on your machine and put in whatever ip name conversion you like. For a couple of IP it tends to be simpler than trying to find another DNS server

That's what I thought too, that my ISP is blocking that dns on my IP... that is a huge problem if I am to use Unlocator again. they don't have any other DNS right now that is working other than that one. My isp doesn't want anything to do with changing dns so I am not sure what I can do now.I don't know anything bout what you wrote about the IP :)

search for "host file" The format is the same on unix and windows. It is in effect your own dns server and you can map any ip to any domain name.

Many thanks, I will try this, but I might be a bit dense, I don't know what to write in the file and how to save it cause it keeps saving as .txt file.
Can you help me further?

I just tried that, didn't work when I entered the DNS 209.177.145.30 into my dns, still no connection.

I assumed that is what you did to start and someone has you blocked and you will not be able to fix that no matter what you set on your end.

We are again back to why you need to use that DNS server rather than one of the other public ones.

You do not put the DNS server ip in the host file. Say some host xxxx.yyyy.com resolves to 5.6.7.8 on the public dns but you need it to resolve to 1.2.3.4 you would put a entry in 1.2.3.4. xxxx.yyyy.com in the host file. All other dns resolutions would use the public dns server.

I have told you I am not smart :)
I still don't know what to write.... I need to be able to watch Netflix, Unlocator does so I can change regions, and so I have to change my DNS to what they use on their server.
Their IP is 104.20.24.130 - 104.20.25.130
The DNS I have to put into my network settings is 209.177.145.30.
So I am really lost as to what to do in the hosts file. :)

If 104.20.24.130 is netflix ip then you just put in the host file

104.20.24.130 www.netflix.com

This means every time you type in the string www.netflix.com the browser will go to that IP no matter what the DNS server says.

Netflix has been making this hard for people lately so I don't know what still works and what does not. I know they have even blocked a lot of the actual VPN sites.

Thank you for your time and patience!!
I can't get it working, when I put it in the host file then I get an access denied on netflix. but it's fine, I am just hoping there will be a solution some day so I won't have to watch the same boring stuff all the time :)
That is not netflix IP but unlocators IP :)
