DNS server not responding on the router side of things....

My router will not recognize DNS settings. I've just gotten a netgear 6250. I am connecting to the internet directly from my cisco modem provided by charter. That works quite well. If I plug the Ethernet from the modem to the router, it tells me the DNS server is not responding. I can not get internet from any of the five Ethernet ports, nor from either Wi-Fi signal. I have tried manually entering in the DNS settings for Charter, and for open DNS to no avail. I'd love any suggestions, as everything I can find so far seems to come from the computer side, and not the actual router. I'm afraid I might have to RMA it, but would love to not have to.

Thank you very much!

Solution
well, amazon has good return policy (lol) and I like the netgear "nighthawk" series i think or the asus darknight ac series

anyway, back to the issue

have you checked to see if there is a new firmware for the device you could connect to modem via pc, download then port 1-4 go into settings and update from local drive right?

also, i know you said this before but make sure the settings for ip and dns are set to automatic

even if not a "newer" version of the firmware you may want to try to update anyway
here are a couple of things to try

1) make sure router is set to obtain ip and dns automatically
2) unpower both the modem and router. plug modem in without connected to anything and wait for it to load and boot properly, then connect to router and after connected to router (assuming cables are good) turn on the router and wait for it to sync and boot up. Sometimes modems do not like to be hotswaped between devices

I power cycle any time I reconnect the modem to the router to test something out. I've tried both auto and manual settings for DNS, auto settings for IP. So far, nothing has worked.

What's the model of the Cisco modem? It could be the Cisco modem is actually a modem and router.

I looked up some models here. Not sure if you have one of these.

Anyway I would connect the ethernet cable to the yellow port on the cisco modem and the other end of cable to the yellow end of the netgear 6250. Then my computer to any of the 4 open ports on the netgear 6250.

The router either has no WAN/LAN lights, or they do not come on when the modem is connected. The only lights are what bleeds to the back from the 4 front panel. The power and wireless lights on the front panel come on. The internet status light does not, I assume that is the WAN light? It did come on last night/this morning (I forget when) but is not coming on now, even with a power cycle of both devices.

The cisco modem only has 1 Ethernet port, so its unlikely to be a router as well, but it is a DPC3216

as far as the lights I was thinking of different model but you said the internet status light does not light up at all.

I checked the user manual for that model
http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/R6250/R6250_UM_17July2013.pdf
and if right on page 9 it shows that if green all is good, amber connected by ethernet but not accessing internet, no light no connection

Is the same cable to connect to the router (the yellow port) the same used with the modem to laptop or pc and is working?

If so the only two things I can think of is one of the tiny connectors in the port is not in alignment or crooked and not causing a connection or you may have a bad router, that is if the cable itself is stable and good, do you have another to just test out?

Also, and i have not read this about your router, you do have it in router mode and not any other mode ...yes?

i do not believe there is a delete post option
you have 2 choices, just leave be as you said fixed (but ask you state what you did to fix it so that if someone else has issue they may find a fix)
you can choose an response as a solve and it will show solved to those looking to help others with unsolved questions.

either way glad you got it fixed

I'm awful at this posting thing on this forum. Sorry. The issue is not resolved. Thank you very much for you patience with me as I learn how this forum works, and work towards finding a solution for my problem. I'm amazed at how willing strangers on the internet are to help out when someone's got a problem.

I hot swapped the modem's connection from PC to router, and the light came up solid amber. Now its again saying that the DNS server is not responding.

i am no great expert but a quote comes to mind that most on these forums understand......
All experts were beginers at some point

ok, try this, forgo setting all the security and everything

power down modem and then power up connected to nothing
while that is happening, leaving router powered up, there should be a reset button (you can use a paperclip or something to access it) push it in and hold for 30 to 60 seconds, when you release it should wipe all setting to out of the box after it appears to be back to normal (can take a couple of minutes) then power down and connect router to the modem then power router back up.

see if that lets you get on to your fresh router (though generic ssid and non secured, if that works we can deal with what settings to use then

forgive if i am being redundan

1) modem to pc internet works fine?
2) modem to router no light on internet
3) you tried another ethernet cable and made sure it clicks in fully
4) you have reset router and still no light on internet
5) modem is connect to wan (yellow) port of router
(no i am not questioning your abilities but making sure i am not missing something)

this shouldn't apply but do you have to sign in to a login page to use internet on pc...should be just plug and go but just verifying

also, you don't by any chance have an older router laying around to test do you?

1) correct
2) light is solid amber, not solid green
3) 2cat 5e, 1 cat6
4) reset router, still just a solid amber light
5) modem has been connected to WAN the while time.

I do not have to log in to access the internet via ethernet to the desktop.

I do not have a spare router laying around. That would be really nice though.

Solution

I'm dealing with the exact same Issue, I did a firmware update and last thing I did is reset default settings, It;s a netgear N600 WNDR3400v2, after reset to factory default, got connection to "internet" but not trough my modem, asking me to login, couldn't access to any website;
I gave up on Netgear, something must have happened to the ethernet port .Ordered 2 TP-Link they're working perfect,
