Do certain computers not have the ability to support higher frequency RAM?

I am wanting to upgrade my RAM from 1.6 GHz to 3.2 GHz, but is there anything I should know before doing that, like would my system not be able to support the 3.2 GHz frequency and actually underclock it automatically? Thank you!

OK, with a laptop, things are a little different. I suggest contacting HP support and asking them what memory upgrades are supported for your model.
