Do graphics cards always give signs before dying?

Friends GPU suddenly stopped giving output while running and he's got no way of testing any of his hardware without spending money. Most obvious case is a dead GPU, so how often do GPUs die without previously giving stuttering/artifacting/noises/anything? He's had it 2 years.

No graphics card should give out after only 2 years. That's not very long. Is it still under warranty?

Take his video card out and put it in a different PC easy to do to check it or put a different video card in his PC to check if that is even the problem. If his motherboard has built in graphics then remove the video card and try the graphics on the motherboard.
