So my laptop a HP Pavillion G6 has been very slow recently and I decided to refresh it, however it says that it is highly recommended to create a recovery drive but just as I backed uo my file the external HDD died out on me and it isn't recognised. Do I really need to create a recovery drive or am I screwed?

Having a recovery drive is always usefull, it's the only way to restore the system if you have a harddrive failure or other system corruption that prevents you from using other kinds of recovery. You could always use a usb stick as the recovery drive.
