Discussion Is the 50 series going to be a flop?

I currently have a 4070 Super, I believe Nvidia is only going to release their main line up every 2 years now instead of every year. So I'm thinking, they'll almost certainly be making Super versions of the cards, with them being significantly better (mostly price points and to probably work better with monitors since this will likely be their first time doing display port 2.1, not sure if it's confirmed to have it and not sure which UHBR version it'd be able to do either ).

With DP 2.1b and HDMI 2.2 coming out before the middle of the yr, think this is a good time to not buy a 50 series, unless you're a streamer or something, but still amd may be a better option, buying intel gpus would also help with forcing nvidia to lower prices. Also, getting others not to buy would be good too.

Another reason i want people not to buy, so they can see that people don't want the gpus to be better than x gpu only with dlss 4, so maybe help us get stronger overall cards.

My current plan is to upgrade to a 50 series super (or whatever they call it) or get a 60 series, since i only have 1 pci-e 5 slot on my motherboard and it looks like it requires 2 slots.

Is there any info on intel's high end gpu? My friend talks about it a lot, but best one i can find is the B580, is there anything about the next gpu from them? If they go to high end, they can definitely help with getting both amd and nvidia to lower their prices.

Is Qualcomm supposed to be making a gpu too? What other competition is there upcoming that could potentially compete with nvidia, amd, and intel's high end cards?

What are you guys' thoughts and opinions?

Upgrading from the 4xxx series to 5xxx might not be a great or cost effective idea.

But not everyone "upgrades". A LOT of people build a whole new system. For them, the 5xxx might not be a bad idea.
If I were building a new system at the end of 2025, 5xxx something would probably be in the mix.

I think that more than anything 5000 series is a strategic iterative upgrade.

It is clear that Nvidia and now AMD want to flood the market with framegen capable hardware, because that's where they see the next step of visual fidelity evolution.

It's a long game that will culminate with the next gen consoles, where you can be sure framegen will be the key capability. That will take a few more years, but it will happen and by that time all 3 PC GPU vendors want to be ready with already existing base in gamers' hands.

When framegen capability becomes a requirement rather than a bonus, that's when they will force all the hordes of dinosaurs to abandon their 10/20/30 series cards (and their alternatives for team red/blue) for an upgrade.

Also, Nvidia is in this ~2-years cycle for a long time. It's not new.

I used to upgrade every other gen, so once in 4 years - but maybe now I'll hold out with my 3080Ti for 60 series, and not because 50 series is bad, but more like because I feel that there just aren't enough games yet to utilize its otherwise impressive capabilities.

The 5000 series seems good to me. Something great that will at release seem totally great. If I ever make a pc i'll probably use a 5000 series GPU (currently using a 970 lol)

Im going to wait for actual reviews im skeptical about Nvidia's BS that have already pulled 5070 as good as 4090 ..

Another thing that feels like a red flag is the 5090 vs 4090 vs 4080 vs 5080 ..

Ill explain the 4090 was what 1600usd at release so they have increased the price up buy $400usd so for all purposes the 5090 is going to crush the 4090 in a big way ..

BUT

Why is the 5080 only $1000usd and Nvidia can pump up the 4090 to 5090 price buy $400usd ??

Is the increase very small vs the 4080 or 4080 super because if you take the 5090 vs 4090s increase why is there no increase with the 5080??

The 5080 should be just as good if not just a little better in all specs as the 4090 so same performance maybe 20gb instead of the 24gb !!


Im not happy honestly about the 16gb on the 5080 if im truly honest as im looking for a upgrade on my 7900xtx if it was 20gb id be more interested ..

This makes me more interested about AMDs new line up ..

what frank is saying here makes perfect sense with what AMD is trying to achieve ( i dont agree with some of it personally) for me though im in the $1000usd price bracket when i purchase my GPU ( sadly AMD have dropped the ball for me )

I want to pay into the $2000 aud price bracket because like my 6900xt and 7900xtx im happy to be at the higher tier card !!

So this gen i may end up buying the 5080 because its in my price bracket
