Approximate Purchase Date: Within the next few weeks

Budget Range: ~$1,000 before GPU purchase (which would probably be in the $600 - $700 range, so about $1800 total)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: High end gaming and streaming, 4K 120Hz

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: Everything

Do you need to buy OS: No

Please note that if you're using an OEM license of Windows, you will need a new one when buying a new motherboard.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:
Newegg, Amazon, and I also have access to the So Cal Micro Center

Location: Orange County, CA

Parts Preferences: Pretty much anything, but I am going for an SFF build

Parts Not Required: Case (already purchased - Lian Li A4-H20), PSU (already purchased - EVGA Supernova 850GM), Cooler (Corsair H100i)

Overclocking: Yes

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: This will be hooked up to a 4K 120Hz LG 55" QNED display

Additional Comments: See below.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading:

So I bought a 4K TV and I am already finding that my system isn't keeping up with the demands coming from the new setup. I had originally planned to migrate my current motherboard and CPU to a new case because I wanted to get a new GPU anyways and my current case (Node 202) won't fit it. I'm looking at either the 7900X or 4070TI, but leaning more towards the 7900X. This was mainly due to some severe cooling issues with the Node 202. If I were to go with a new CPU, it would either be the i7-13700K or the Ryzen 7 7700X. My question is - do I just salvage my existing setup and upgrade my CPU to a 5800X3D or a 5950X or do I cut my losses and build a new system? Because I want to get the most performance from my new monitor possible, and I really want to know which direction to go in before I start buying the rest of the parts.

This is my existing rig:

Fractal Design Node 202
Corsair SF600 SFX-L
Asus ROG Strix B550-i
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
Noctua NH-L9a
32GB G Skill DDR4-3600
Western Digital Black SN750 1TB
EVGA GeForce 2070 (I will use this GPU in the new system until I can get my hands on a current gen one)

This would be the new planned rig:

Lian Li A4-H20 (already purchased)
EVGA Supernova 850GM (already purchased)
Gigabyte B650i AORUS Ultra (AMD) or AsRock Z790-I PG ITX (Intel)
AMD Ryzen 7 7700X or Intel i7-13700K
Corsair H100i Elite Capellix (already purchased)
Samsung 980 Pro 2TB
32GB G.Skill Ripjaw S5 DDR5-6000
AMD Radeon 7900XT or Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070TI

at 4k the gpu is the bottleneck. you'll want all the gpu power can you can get while the cpu is not as important.

unless you use software that needs the extra cpu power, you can easily get away with a 5900x (or stick with the 5600x if it handles the software) and then grab as much gpu as you can get.

i'd not personally update the platform yet if i were spending now, and would go stupid on the gpu :)

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I did see that Micro Center had the X3D for less than $300, and the 5950X is around $400. and that's probably the better way to go right now. But I am definitely planning on getting a 7900XT or 4070TI depending on what's available and what will fit into my case.

I think I would check with a GPU inside a workable case before changing anything else just to see what you gain and if it is satisfactory. The 5600X is still a very relevant and powerful CPU for gaming.

It's rated to hold GPUs as big as the XFX Merc 310, which is the card that I want. And that's according to multiple sources I checked, which is why I got that particular case in the first place. SFF is a whole different breed than ATX, but I am certainly up for the challenge!

I just swapped back off of an m-ITX motherboard which I had installed into the 011D mini on the "centered" standoff pattern. I started doing ITX builds some years ago and enjoy them for various reason. Eventually though it always comes around to making concessions on power/noise, or expandability. This last board even has the Thunderbolt connections on the back which I thought I would use but was also quite uninformed on the pricing of that standards hardware. Even with my HTPC which has typically been a shoe-in for the platform got moved over to an ATX style case. (didn't help with temps at all)

Nice graphics card, by the way. Quite beefy. It won't fit the larger Lian Li?
