Do I have a virus or..?

First off, I'm not COMPLETELY computer illiterate. I built my own pc and have a decent understanding of how stuff works. But when it comes to security and software I'm a little lost. I have avast and have never had any problems before. The other day, I got an odd error message saying that I needed to restart my comp because of a driver failed or something. Thought it might have to do with my keyboard, since that same day I updated the firmware. Today, I tried to access my task manager, and it opens for a sec, and then shuts itself down.. I ran a scan and nothing was found. What are the general steps one needs to take to make sure their computer is secure? I'm running 8.1 if that helps at all..

Avast may not detect some malware. Start your computer in safe mode with networking. Download malwarebytes free.
Install it and run a full scan.

Just did. Still nothing. :/ Wouldn't even start up task manager in safe mode...

EDIT: Tried opening it again in safe mode. Got this.

No, it opened and scanned. Didn't find anything.

You may want to try this. Windows defender offline. For windows 8.1 it will refer you to the Beta version.

The flash drive method is best. You can reuse it. It will update itself every time.
