Hello Everybody,

I want to upgrade my cpu from Intel Core i3 2120 to 3rd Gen i5/i7 probably.
Everything else will remain the same.
I just want to add new CPU to my existing motherboard. So I wanted the guidance from you whether I have to re-install everything by formatting hard drive?
I have my personal in hard drive so hesitating a little bit for formatting.
Just need your assistance in this regards.
Looking forward to your reply.

Thank You,

Regards,
Rahul

Solution
you don't have format your hard drive.
Make sure to get rid of static electric current before installing cpu. Apply thermal paste and install cpu cooler and connect the cables to motherboard. Once you are done, clear the CMOS by unplugging psu cable and take out the motherboard battery. Wait for 1 min and plug-in your psu cable and battery and start the pc. Upon booting enter BIOS, set date and time in your BIOS settings and see the boot priority is to your hdd reboot. After you are into windows, install latest chipset, vga drivers. Reboot and you are good to go.
If you're only upgrading your CPU then no you don't need to reformat your HD or reinstall the OS. But you need to make sure you update your bios to the latest one so your motherboard can recognize the new CPU without any problems.
