Do I need 970 for 990fx chipset to run AMD FX 8350?

Either supports AM3+ and thus FX parts.

That mobo is supported for you cpu. But you should consider 990 as its better for oc and other stuff.

"other stuff" well that would refer to connectivity and features the motherboards present, since 990FX represents the highest end chipset its boards tend to have more of said connectivity and features suck as faster and more PCI-e 2.0 slots, More SATA and USB connectors, Frontside USB3.0, Faster DIMMS and obviously higher phase VRM design for clocking and a few other bells and whistles.

As for OC...well that is not necessarily true, a 970XA UD3 clocks more than a 990FXA UD3 from tests run, not all boards and chips clock the same OCing is never a reason to buy a board.

I have that board in the non M version , full size , it's a good board that supports the fx chips . I like it because you can run it without the need of a separate video card if you want . Other than that you can overclock the cpu easily , I don't go for extreme overclocks though , just stable oc for best performance .
In fact I like it better than the cheap MSI 970g 46 it replaced .

@sarinaide, but 970 chip supports upto 4800mt/s HT where 990 supports 5200mt/s. For more pci-e card, you will need that. As AMD said, there maybe some performance hamper due to low HT of 970. Though it will bottleneck any way.

Its a cheaper chipset against a highend chipset, that said if you are buying a 970 it is because you are on a budget and so a Highend GPU is similarly out the question.

My suggestion to the user is;

1]

FX 4300/4170
Gigabyte GA970XA UD3
DDR3 1600 (8GB kit)
HD7850

2]

FX 6300
ASUS M5990X Evo
DDR3 1600 (8GB kit)
HD7870 GE

My suggestion is to stay away from AMD process for gaming. Get an i3-2100 instead. Some game will bottleneck in amd cpu anyway. No matter how much you overclock, there will be high bottleneck even with 6770.

So with 5200mt/s instead of 4800mt/s, there will less bottleneck as it will need to send instruction to gpu.

While I will admit that Intel does have better performance per core, why would you even think to suggest an i3 over the 8350? While yes it does have better single core performance (slightly) it gets dominated on literally every other level. Either you're trolling or extreme fanboy.

Comparison: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i3-3220-vs-AMD-FX-8350

Well, i3 is very good for the price and has great upgrade path to gaming beast like i5/i7, which is way better than any amd processor.

Do you hear that? that's the sound of all credibility you had dissipating into thin air...

I have the m5a78l-m lx plus in my mid-tier gaming build. I recently looked into the manual and it says that it supports FX CPUs up to 125w TDP. I've read some reviews on newegg saying that you need to update the bios when installing Vishera chips (i.e 8320, 8350, etc.) but I haven't tested it on my own board so I can't say for sure. I'm gonna go ahead and update my bios just to be on the safe side because I plan on getting an FX 8320 chip soon to replace my 6100 chip.

The board itself is good for the price and performs well. Only con in my opinion is that it doesn't have usb 3.0 headers. Doesn't affect my gaming performance so it really isn't much of a con.

You are better off getting the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055QYKQO if you want a great board for the price. I wouldn't consider a 970 board with the prices you can get the 990FX boards at now.

If you want a really excellent board with great capacitors and VRM cooling then the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008YDJHWM is they way to go. This board is geared for overclocking and reliability and is generally the preferred choice for enthusiasts.

The UD3 is only good if you get the Rev. 4. That revision has great vrm's and nice heatsinks on the board. It even supports the 9370 and 9590. I have a Sabertooth first revision and it is a great overclocking board. That being said if you don't have a custom loop the UD3 will get an 8320 or 8350 just as high an overclock as the Sabertooth.

It seems like all mobos with the 990fx northbridge dont have any on board video lol
i guess if you have that type of mobo they are expecting you to go all in lol
