Hello I was wondering do I need a graphics card to watch ultra hd movies look at stored photos and do everyday tasks or will on board graphics do the job? I was thinking of basing this around an asus maximus vii impact with just a sound card1

Yes 4k movies. So would a graphics card be better than a sound card? Is onbaord sound just as good as a sound card like the creative sound blaster z? would the 1030 also be able to play fifa 18 in 4k?

For 4k you need a graphics card full stop ,you don't need a soundcard.
That board has an headphone amplifier, does 5.1 analog,5.1 via the spdif optical port & upto 9.1 dolby atmos home theatre via the hdmi output.
Adding any modern gpu gives you the same upto 9.1 option via the gpu hdmi output.

Will the gt1030 play fifa 18 at 4k?
Yes id imagine it will at reduced settings, for any other titles at 4k you really need to spend an awful lot of money though - gtx 1070 minimum.

You already own the board I assume ?? As haswell is some 4 years old now & completely discontinued.

My motherboard is an asus maximus viii impact which is a z170 chipset which takes a skylake cpu so the sound quality on that be good enough then?

You don't need a sound card.
You have already headphone and speakers etc plugs on your motherboard.
The GT1030 will do its job but what do you want to do with a graphics card?
4k videos fifa 18 at 4k and everything else?
Also what are your full system specs?

You did say the vii before which is haswell.

Skylake can handle 4k video & has native hevc support too - for 4k media its fine , it just wont manage any gaming - not even fifa - at that resolution.

As above the audio on the maximus boards is firat class - absolutely no need for a soundcard at all.

Ahh sorry for the confusion of vii. My specs are:

Inteal core i5 6600k
Asus maximus viii impact
G.Skills trident z 8gb
Evga gtx 770 but upgrading to 1030/1060
Samsung evo 120gb SSD
Seagate expansion 1tb 2.5 HDD
Corsair SF 600
Corsair modular braided cable kit for sf power supplies
Noctua nh-9li/cryorig c7 cpu cooler not chosen yet

I only want to use the system to watch movies in 4k and play fifa. I wont be heavy gaming. Will this system be good? Which of the two coolers shal I opt for? just to make sure before I build the system!
Fractal design node 202 case

Im using a samsung 32 inch 1080p tv a s a monito atm but will up grade to a samsung 40 inch ultra hd tv

The issue with 4k tv's is they don't have displayport .
The old 770 will do 4k via hdmi but it's limited to 30htz max , this is a non issue for video playback as the majority of stuff is 24htz .

Gaming at 30htz though can look very stuttery

I would try the 770 though before buying anything else , gpu's are terribly priced at the moment.

This sounds good to me. Yea I will stick with the 770. So that gpu will play 4 k movies via hdmi cable? I know gpus are terribly priced like £500-£600 is the lowest I have seen for a GTX 1080 and up to a £1000 for the TI version. Hence why Im sticking to the pc only for 4k movie viewing and console for 4k gaming. Do you think that node 202 case is a good case?
