Do I need displayport to use G-Sync?

First post from a long time reader, so thank you to everyone in the community for all the info!

I have an ASUS 248QE monitor, for which I currently use a DVI-D cable. I just assumed G-Sync would work automatically, but from various posts I've read I am a little confused. Does G-Sync only work with Displayport?

I also plan to buy the NVIDIA vision kit 2 for 3d gaming. Does DVI or Displayport matter for 3d gaming?

GPU: Gigabyte g1 Gaming GTX 970
MOBO: AsRock Fatal1ty 970
PSU: EVGA 600W 80+ Bronze
Storage: OCZ Arc 100 240BG SSD for operating system (Win7)
Storage: WD 1TB 7200 HDD
Case: Corsair Carbide 200r
Case Fans: added 2 120mm static pressure fans (4 total)
Optical: cheapest I could find

yea, at the moment you need display port 1.2 to utilise G-Sync
as stated on the FAQ

Freesyn or Vsync can only be done via displayport.
