do i need java for my internet shops? am having messaging problems in all stores on etsy and amazon since i bought this new computer and not sure if i had it enabled on old computer.

Solution
If you do not need Java, do not install it. It can pose security risks for your computer, but if you need it then you are kind of hooped!

This is why backing up your machine is so important. Things like Java leave your system vulnerable but at the same time are functional requirements for a lot of applications. Best thing you can do is run a disk imager (i.e. Macrium Reflect) or a snapshot tool (i.e. Rollback Rx) and if you encounter an issue, simply restore the machine.

Almost every animation in any webpage uses java, so without java you simply won't be able to see them (for example fancy interactive screens like flash games).

What security risks are you talking about, Fatty Luke? Of course, if you press on every fake scam message that says "you've won $1.000.000! click here to get your money" that requires java to run a java script with virus inside, then yes, it makes you vulnerable. For such dumb people there is a company called "Apple", which prioritizes the security and its job is to tell you that "you dumbass don't click on that link it's a virus", otherwise it expands the capabilities of surfing the web by a lot.

Question from cicalese653 : "do i need java"

Usually Java is installed and needs to be updated. Depending on what you use, you may need to install Java, which isn't much. Is a website requiring Java?

Of course we could tell all tech illiterate people to go buy a Mac but that's not really the point.

50% of Cyber Attacks come from Java Web Browser plug ins. That's quite a lot.

I'm not really an advocate for disabling Java. In my mind if you have a decent security config with a firewall, content blocker, backup, etc you will be fine. Instead of disabling Java, people should be investing in a decent security config which if they did would be the better way of doing it.

Or you know, do it like Crazy Dave does and have a machine with no plugins, no programs, and no internet connection. Although you probably wouldn't last a week

I think you are thinking of javascript. javascript is not the same as java

Yes, they are different, but as in java's download page it is said, "The JRE allows applets written in the Java programming language to run inside various browsers.", i've personally spent some time programming/creating these applets for browsers and they do require java, not javascript. (yes, i know that javascripts are used more often in webpages, but also so is java, not everywhere, but i could find some examples)
