Do I need to uninstall my nvidia Drivers before installing my AMD GPU?

yes you can install the amd drivers first, literally just swap out the nvidia card for the amd one, install the amd drivers (i recommend using the 14.6 beta driver), then uninstall the nvidia drivers

plug the gpu in and go into the bios, its likely that the intel hd is taking priority over the pcie slot, disable intel hd by changing your primary graphics setting to the pcie port, then download and install 14.6 catalyst, make sure it is the correct version for your gpu and operating system

Right, here is what I did. I still had the Nvidia drivers installed, couldn't install the catalyst, I never installed the GPU, it never detected it. Took out the R9 270X Because I was getting no signal from the motherboard OR the GPU. I went into PC, installed intel HD because I had uninstalled it and I thought that had f***ed it up. And then I plug back in the GT 640 and the screen loads fine without any issues. I am sort of thinking that it is the NVIDIA drivers causing trouble? What do you guys think?

that something is going oddly wrong for you, when i swapped out my gtx 690 for a pair of r9 290s it detected the gpus just fine, even if you dont have an amd card installed you should have no problem installing catalyst if you select the correct gpu model and OS, the nvidia drivers should not be an issue as they wont load unless windows detects a compatable nvidia gpu, literally just plug in the 270x, ensure that all power connectors are on correctly, ensure that your monitor cable is plugged into the gpu, not your motherboard, go into the bios, make sure that the primary gpu is set to pcie, not onboard graphics or auto. and all should run fine

Right something is going wrong here and I NEED help ASAP. So I turned off the PC (This is when I had my GT 640 in it) First I uninstalled the GT 640 via device manager. Then turned off the PC and then uninstalled the GT 640, installed the R9 270X and turned on the PC and no signal. I then thought uninstalling the Device from the device manager would have uninstalled the NVIDIA drivers but it didn't, so I went back on with the GT 640 and uninstalled ALL NVIDIA Drivers. But some weird thing happened along the way, I have intel HD 2000 and when no drivers where installed, it started installing VGA Controller drivers? I think this has something to do with the iGPU. Because first I uninstalled the GT 640 and then installed the r9 270X and got no signal? Do I need more RAM? I currently ave 4GB DDR3 @600MHz RAM at the moment. The minimum is 4GB So I dont know why it isn't booting? The cards fan is spinning. However, I don't think that it is reaching post because when I switch it off, it is almost instant.

Do I need some sort of BIOS update or something?

PLEASE HELP ME ASAP!
Thanks.

So do I HAVE to have the AMD card installed to install the drivers for it? Because it seemed to have an issue loading the driver installer? I put it the disc that came with it first and that installed Catalyst Install Manager?

Please help.
Thanks.

sounds like you need to update the bios drivers on everything to do with the motherboard so do that, also dont rely on the disk, download catalyst from the amd website directly, and install the correct version for your card and operating software YOU DO NOT NEED THE CARD IN THE SYSTEM TO DO THIS, also, when you plug in the gpu ensure that all power connectors are in correctly and that the the display cable is plugged into the card NOT THE MOTHERBOARD, finally, stop fiddling in device manager, its totally unneccesary use it to check if the harware is detected.

Really bad advice here guys.

While it might work to take a lackadaisical approach as others have mentioned; as you have seen, its also a good way to invite errors.

Here is the essential order of operations.

- Download the latest drivers from the AMD website.
- Uninstall all Nvidia drivers using the Add/remove programs function in the Windows Control Panel.
- Shut off the PC and swap out the cards.
- Turn on the PC and install the latest drivers downloaded from the AMD website. Do not use the drivers from the CD disk.

I have had it, nothing is god damn working with this card! Is it my BIOS? I used to have a Lenovo H520s and then I swapped out the case and PSU for a better. I still have the motherboard however. So could someone perhaps find my latest BIOS?
It has taken too god damn long to get this thing working!

Thanks.

wait, your system is a prebuild? i could be mistaken on this but your version of windows could actually be locked to the default hardware make up of the PC, but what 17 seconds has said should absoloutely have worked if theres not some sort of lcok built in, as that approach has worked with all of the gpu changes i have made in the last 2 years (5 in total)

I have added a GPU, so it must work. Is it worth mentioning that I have intel HD graphics also. When I turned off my pc and uninstalled the GT 640, I went into Windows again but with no GPU, I thought I had to disable intel HD, so I did? Is this a problem?

Thanks.

Oh and I have completely modified the PC. I have added another case, a new PSU and a GPU.

just please, if you can, when you next boot up your pc, go into the bios screen, try and find the system agent in advanced settings and make sure that the primary display is set to pcie, im not 100% sure why this is being a pain for you as it really shouldnt be an issue, but im sure its some silly setting somewhere not working right. sad thing is taht if most of us forum users were hands on we could probably sort it quite quickly but we can only do so much from behind a screen.

also, if you have two pcie slots on your mobo, plug the 270x into the second one, keep the gt640 in the first as we know that works, then go into device manager and scan for new hardware, if its not picking up the 270x at all, then there may be a fault with the card.
