the manual for my motherboard says that for analog audio, a cable(4 pin) can be plugged in to the Audio_In header, and the other end of the cable(also 4 pin)to the analog connection on the CD/ROM or DVD.
I don't have a digital audio cable connector. i also don't have a sound card. but when I play a CD, I get music coming out of my attached speakers.
does this mean I don't need to use the cable? I am running Windows XP Pro.the audio is incorporated into the motherboard.

You don't need that cable, it is pumping the audio down the data lines(SATA/PATA) to the motherboard, processing them, and then outputting over the speaker line. Most CD/DVD drives no longer offer you a place to plug that cable in since it serves no purpose in modern systems.
