I have a roughly 9 year old system. It consists of Asus z97 pro gamer MB, i7-4790k, gtx980 (going to upgrade to rtx2070). I have recently installed a m.2 ssd in the slot above the graphics card, a pcie adapter for another m.2 ssd. Everything works faster and more stable than the old hdd and sata ssd from the original setup.
The only thing is I am still running with the original 0501 BIOS version. Do I really need to update it as from what I read it can be risky?
I have googled extensively and come up with several reasons to leave it. One, I am not updating the CPU, and two, I don’t plan to run windows from the new m.2, still using the SATA ssd. I have just transferred all my software to the new PCIE m.2. It is running incredibly faster than before, I would say about 3-4 times faster, some things are happening even faster. I am happy but wondered if the BIOS update would make things even better?
I did find the m.2 enable setting in the bios menu by the way, and have gone through every setting from the original mboard manual to familiarise with it.
The BIOS updates mention CPU support and nvme support but nothing about GPU support.
I have tried to do as much research as possible in the last few days.
Hope someone can help?

If you have no problems, leave it until any changes warrant upgrade.
