Go to Ifixit, they even have a kit to add the SSD and keep your large hard drive.I have done this using a SAMSUNG 830 SSD and kept mt 500GB hard drive in a 21.5 IMAC. The samsung works great in all MACS.

I believe i speak for 91% of us on this particular matter when I say;

Seriously? We've crossed this threshold? Tom's, I thought we were better than that! I can see an article like this on the news feed, but on the headline reel? Sorry ACHIM ROOS & BENJAMIN KRAFT, no offense to you or your journaling skills but This Apple/MAC stuff is out of hand, we're supposed to be helping people with advice and stories to help them better their technical skills so they can learn to NOT pay premiums to companies such as Dell & Apple, especially in today's economy. This article might have set us back a few years... /sigh

I implore you to reconsider publishing any more headlines about eeeeevil Apple.

Sincerely, People who know reason

Ps. Isn't April Fools over? You can take this article down now :)

Actually that's the idea, dumbass. Buying SSD from Apple will cost a lot more. Do your research before you rant.

Oooooh, name calling, lookout for the badassery folks! I yield!

Get over yourself pal, we shouldn't be catering to people who spend $1,500.00 on a proprietary piece of hardware with almost no option to upgrade, but when they can, they want to save a couple bucks?

That's like buying an Aston Martin and when it's time to get new brakes, they go to Pep Boys...

Good Talk, thanks for coming in today, we're all counting on you...

For most people computers are just another commodity. ...another toaster. Apple adds some shinyness to the toaster that I supppose may add to the decor. ...the decorative commodity. You can always find a cheaper toaster that will still toast your bread. Some techy types may even prefer to build their toasters. However, most people aren't gonna do that and those with disposable income tend to like shiny and slick in their kitchens. ...there's nothing wrong with a company catering to those folks with products like the iMac. Some people don't want the most economical option, nor do they need to seek it, nothing wrong with that.

This is a good article and its on an appropriate website...good job Ben. An iMac just doesn't fulfill the geek in me...for that I prefer the Mac Pro and my gaming rig. Good thing I'm not a representation of much of the populace.

[citation][nom][/nom]We end up with a lot of SSDs sitting around the lab [/citation]
I was about to make a sarcastic comment, such as "Oh, you poor things," until I realized that you can't use them in your own computers and they have to sit there all day doing nothing as you stare at them, wishing that you had them. So...You poor things!

I wonder if the folks that engage in the [insert company name here] hating realize that the little noises they make go unheard by most everyone that it would make any difference to. It's like the ants raving about the boot before being trampled.

However there is a bigger picture here, as maybe your mom, your sister or someone in your family or friend group bought an iMac. And because your are so skillful building PCs you can give a hand and replace the Hard Drive with an SSD option. And this article helps to know what you may be dealing with.

On the other hand is dumb and an irrational practice to disqualify people for expending more on a compact computer as every day we all pay premium prices for comfort, more delicious food that not necessarily is healthier, flashier personal articles, even a hair cut. No one will "always" expend money in a rational and functional manner. Let's say you expend money to buy an expensive perfume for your girlfriend.

Having said that, the iMac is not my favorite computer because it wasn't conceived to be a workstation. But is nice to know if you have one the HD can be replaced, although the process is moderately difficult.

I have had apple pcs, I have had numerous iphones, (I have a 4s right now) and I am wondering too why there is an article about how to change your SSD? Never mind that it is about apple, this should just be a forum post just like all the other DIY stuff.

I have to say I though TOMS has never been like this before. This is twilight zone weird.

P.S. No more macs for me, they fail on me. A buddy of mine has melted 3 mac book pros doing graphics on his at our university. Macs fail like PCs do sometimes, they just cost 3 x as much.

[citation][nom]bigbadmike[/nom]@Razor512 ... and then you realize that dust is mostly made from dead human skin and you just got naked during a standard PC upgrade for no apparent reason.[/citation]

skin does not directly become dust, but lint and other particles from clothing mostly floats round and is more likely to make it's way to the screen.

When I work on the imac, I won't want there to be any dust, it doesn't come from the factory with dust in between the LCD and the glass, so it shouldn't have any when I am done working on it.

The glass on the imac is very hard to clean when particles manage to get on it, even if you clean it with the proper micro fiber cloth and finish off with lens tissue.

from personal experience, the clothing is more likely to cause dust and other particles to get onto the screen.

after dead pixels and pressure marks, the next most annoying thing possible for an LCD screen is having dust or other unwanted particles in a location where you are unable to clean it in a reasonable manner.

You don't need that $30 fan control software. Just run the command:
/applications/smcfancontrol.app/Contents/resources/smc -k F1Mx -w 1200
(you'll need to download the free SMC fan control app)
Make it an automator task so it runs at every boot.

More stupid design from Apple. Beautiful on the outside - nightmare on the inside. Better than the old iBook that had to be COMPLETELY dismantled to replace the HD. or the Mac Mini which requires a putty knife to open.

Is there any reason the HD and RAM on an iMac shouldn't be easily available under a cover - like a laptop?
....because Jobs didn't think it was pretty.

Who in their right mind uses any laptop for graphics work?!

Lots of people actually. They do make mobile workstations. ...and all you need a decent laptop with a decent enough hardware and a display that meets your needs. My 15" MacBook Pro could easily handle graphics work as could countless other laptops I'm sure.

$11 for a double suction glass lifting tool?!
You can get yourself 12 suction cups in a pack for $1 at the $.99 cent store.
It will still lift the glass and you save yourself $10 bucks.

My Mom loves her All-in-One that I got her. (she's 78). She was just amazed that everything is built into the monitor. There are a lot of folks that feel the same way (I ain't one of them). These folks love the look of their all-in-ones but and generally are not too performance hungry. I wonder how many of them would bother with this procedure? ...and it should be a crime that Apple charges what they do for memory and SSDs (I kinda doubt their top-shelf SSDs too).

That said, for the folks that would buy an iMac with an SSDS already in it probably don't need to worry about the extra money they're giving to Apple and their shareholders. Must be nice when money isn't a consideration.
