Do PC's shut down if they get to hot?

I was running a stability test, and after 34 minutes it crashed, reaching a tempature of 95 degrees celcious on my Ryzen 5 1600. Did my pc shut down because it was a bad overclock, or did it shut down because of the thermals? If it was the thermals, I am planning on buying an h100i cooler soon, would that fix my problems?

Both a crash and overheating can cause a PC to restart or shutdown. You won't know which one it is with any certainty until you try it.

95°C is the Ryzen 5 1600's maximum temperature specified by AMD. The processor may either become unstable or thermal throttle before the maximum is reached.

The stock cooler, although functional, is not known for being 'perfect' for 3.9 GHz full/heavy load operations...embrace the tan/poop colored Noctua for the win!
