The last time I needed one was to install Win7. Used a usb to sata connector and just set the dvd rom on the desk. Installed, removed. Nice clean looking PC Case, all I wanted

Same here. I used a SATA>USB adapter to install Windows and that's it. I'm using an H440 now and haven't had the need to use an ODD bay since.
Digital downloads are good idea - BUT - what do you do when you cant get an internet connection and need to reinstall operating system or favourite software ?
I did until I bought non-modular power supplies. Those wires are so thick so I bundle them and put them in the optical drive bay however I need to make recovery discs for my windows 8 PCs so I should have done that before I swapped out the power supplies.

Any disk I have I can put into my laptop and transfer the files to the USB.
