Does a GTX 780 Support 1440p 144hz Monitors?

I was looking at the "new" Asus PG279Q monitor and noticed it said this:
Note:
1) 2560 x1440 @ 165Hz only works with DP port. The HDMI port only supports 2560 x 1440 @ 60Hz.
2) Only NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 and above graphics card can support 2560 x 1440 up to 165Hz. Please contact the GPU manufacturers for detailed specification.
Are they ONLY talking about 1440p at 165hz? Would buying that monitor be a waste for me with my GTX 780 3GB?

I'd really love an IPS 1440p 144hz monitor to primarily game on, also to do some productive work from time to time.

Any recommendations? What are the best options? but also not too expensive!

Solution
Yes, G-sync up to 144Hz is supported on the 780.

The 165Hz on the PG279Q is a bit of a compromise anyway. At 144hz it is calibrated for the 4ms response time and has very low input lag. As you increase past 144 it starts to get worse.

Thats very calming to know my card supports 1440p 144hz +GSync!

I've heard that GSync helps make the low FPS more smoother, is that right? Like for example I'll be playing some graphically demanding games at about 30-40 Fps but it would feel smooth like 60 or something?
Or am I completely misinformed?

Now all I need to is pick my best option, any recommendations? Or should I save up for the PG279Q? 😛

G-sync only works through Display Port, so the other ports are more or less irrelevant.

G-sync will let the GPU control the refresh on the monitor. If you dip below 144Hz it will start drawing less frames to the monitor. Prevents tearing (seeing multiple frames on the screen at once). Smoothness is another matter. As the refresh rate drops you will lose the advantages of the high refresh.

Does the same apply if I set the monitor to 60hz? Since the games I'll lag in usually will be the ones where I can't reach 144 FPS/Hz anyway so would G-sync work on lower framerates?

Thanks.

Yes, though that really doesn't matter. If it can't do 60hz it will pick a lesser frequency. After 30hz I believe it starts showing frames twice to improve smoothness, though this does introduce some lag issues with input. Generally you don't want to drop below 60hz no matter what you are doing, so having the settings for performance vs visuals when you are beyond your GPUs capacity is important.
